Carrying on with the Medieval theme.

I remember my dad taking me to see El Cid when I was probably far too young to appreciate it. I have seen it since (and appreciated it) though.

I watched and enjoyed this minor 90's classic last night. Hadn't seen it for 25 years!

One of my fave films of all time. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/THX_1138Then I have hated pretty much every other George Lucas film I have seen. This film seems completely out of character and all the better for it. Wanna feel estranged and detached? Watch it. You'll see what I mean.

Memento is a superb film, one of a kind and quite mesmerising.

I watched "Brightburn" last night. It's not so much a superhero film as a "What would have happened if Superman was a nasty, spiteful child," film. The story starts, as in Superman, with a spaceship crash-landing on earth, on a farm, and being discovered by a married couple who take the baby inside it into their home, and their family. From that point on the two stories diverge at an ever increasing rate. Superman never had puberty issues like this kid. There are some very well-done jump-scares, and some genuinely spooky (and horrific) moments. Not a great film, but in the "superhero/super-villain" genre, it's definitely a worthy entrant. It pushed very close to the boundaries of its "15" classification at times.

I now have a fourth film to add to my outstanding films of the year and it's the first English language one.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Small budget, independent film shot on 16mm. It's the lead actors début and not only that, she had no aspirations to be an actress, she's a musician (Sidney Flanigan). It's an outstanding performance and a very gritty story. There's an 11 minute single take which is one of the most moving and emotionally powerful scenes I've seen in cinema for a long time. Watched it twice now, it's really very good. Marky boy likes it too Sharon Van Etten has a small role.
Available on Prime, YouTube and Google Play (£3.49) Just a tip, if you do take a punt, just rent the SD version, not point in HD IMO as it's filmed on 16mm.

I perked up at the mention of SvE. She was in Brit Marling's The OA. I love her music, too.

Just when you think this film can't get any weirder, it finds another gear. Excellent.

Did you enjoy the score julesd68? I've been seriously considering it for my next Album Club, though it might just get pipped by something very similar.

One of Martin's favourite films ...as long as I'm never subjected to it again. Plastic acting that gets worse than a Lego movie.

That's a shame I couldn't crank the audio - when it kicks in it packs quite a punch ... Not sure I'm ready for a second sitting just yet - found the OST on Spoti though!

I've just finished watching Jordan Peele's "Get Out," and it was rather good. I won't say too much, in case I give anything away, but I will say it's worth watching, and it is, at heart a horror film. It's also probably more "relevant" now than when it was made, in 2017. You might recognise the lead actor, Daniel Kaluuya; he's yet another Brit playing an American.
Jordan Peele won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Get Out.
I've also got Peele's followup film to watch, "US," and I'm really looking forward to it. Mark Kermode gave Get Out 4/5 stars, and awarded the same score to US. Peele also had a hand in Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" which I keep meaning to watch.
