Ok rarely do go this far with films but, CATS redefines the the terms of plumbing the depths of utter dross of the first order, the ability to bore the bollocks off a charging Rhino at 60 paces whilst instilling in the watchers of this undisilled tripe to eat their own feet to keep sane This has to be the worst film in the last 5 years we have been to see This film is absolutely like being forced to listen to neither musical (non) fidelity or niam while having your eyeballs being dripped with hot wax while being whipped with a wet salty slug Save yourselves from pain and anguish even once upon a time in Hollywood is mildly better Nothing can save this film except using an acid bath for the master copies Universal management must be lining up a firing squad for this utter farce infact watching a venus fly trap digest it freshly caught meal is infinitely more engaging Now I REALLY want to see it mind you, if I didn't have an Unlimited card and had to actually buy a ticket, then I wouldn't go.
I'm hoping I can last more than 20 minutes . . . I think my fastest walk out was about 7 minutes for The Greatest Showman. I'm not good with musical films, live theatre musicals yes, but films, not so much.

I detest all forms of musical, stage or film, and I'm fairly intolerant of most opera.

I detest all forms of musical, stage or film, and I'm fairly intolerant of most opera. I struggle with them normally, saw Cats in London and it was a real trial, but my girlfriend wanted to see it.
However, my opinion was changed when I saw the Carole King musical, Beautiful. It was very good indeed, but had the advantage of being based on her life with her songs, unlike the Lloyd Webber musical beige mainstream productions, which you can definitely keep.
I think musicals like Beautiful are a rarity though.

The first musical I went to see was Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End, and it was brilliant.

Two musicals I absolutely love are The Sound of Music and Cabaret.
Have never entertained the idea of seeing one on stage ...

My mum took me to a Monteverdi opera a few years back - couldn't stand the singing but very fine music ...

I've seen a few operas: Carmen has probably the best music, Traviata a few memorable moments, Poulenc's Les Carmelites some lovely music. Overall, though, I can do without it.
Someone wanted me to go with them to see Les Miserables once. I said it would sure make me miserable. I didn't go.

I'd actually like to see Carmen but not some hideous 'contemporary' staging of it ...

Someone wanted me to go with them to see Les Miserables once. I said it would sure make me miserable. I didn't go. It's on in Cardiff at the moment and I would need a bottle of Lagavulin Distillers Edition as a bribe before you'd get me in a seat (as well as a free ticket!).
Cats
Well I didn’t think Cats was as bad as people are saying, it’s definitely not great but I’ve seen worse films this year for sure, way worse. But it’s a very poor excuse considering it’s budget and director, who should be ashamed to be honest. It’s just not finished and should never have been released. It looks like it’s been thrown together at the last minute for a rough draft first viewing, not a final release. Very poor inception and the whole concept just didn’t work on the screen for me. The CGI is appalling, terribly amateur and when you notice feet dancing inches above the floor and then toes beneath the surface of the floor, you start concentrating on the cock-ups more than the film itself. The face/CGI skin matching is rather creepy and would I reckon scare most young kids, it’s just doesn’t work well and looks a bit freaky. The scale of the sets is totally out of whack with the actors, even in the same shots it’s inconsistent and the editing is atrocious. For a musical the standard of music is often mediocre, with some quite shocking interpretations, which really let's it down. There’s loads more I could pick fault with, but you get the idea. But to be fair, there is some good. I thought the choreography in places was excellent, Francesca Hayward (principal ballerina at The Royal Ballet) was superb and I really enjoyed watching her and I know very little about ballet, but I thought she did a great job, not just as a dancer, but acting too. Taylor Swift performed really well, but unfortunately had less than 10 minutes on screen, she could have featured a lot more. Rebel Wilson and James Corden however, well the less said the better. Neither added anything of value and their attempt at injecting some humour fell on deaf ears. I was cringing most of the time they were centre stage – not good! I did manage to stay to the end and I’m guessing I saw the edited second release, as I’d read some complaints about Judi Dench being a bit too ‘cat like’ and licking her bum, which really freaked people out – well unless I was in the loo, that’s been cut. It was under 100 minutes and supposed to be 110, so they have it seems lopped it. All in all it will probably bomb badly and Universal are going to lose a shit load of money. There were about 20 people in the screen this morning, none under 40 with the majority being female over 55. That’s not good for a U rated film two days before Christmas. I’m glad I went to see it though, but I wouldn’t pay for a ticket and I most certainly don’t want to ever see it again. I’d score it 3/10. I reckon in years to come (when they finally finish it for the DVD release) it’ll become a cult classic

I find musicals in film tedious, and on stage I'm not a big fan of them but it's a night out with people which somehow makes it more tolerable...
Yet I did like the movie musical 'Hello Dolly' somehow. Barbara Streisand was easy on the eyes in those days and it was interesting to see Walter Mathau looking so young. I think it's the only film musical I've seen that I could stand.
