Thanks to all who have recommended The Red Violin in the past. Watched it last night and absolutely loved it. The casting and performances are superb; I also thought the attention to detail in the production design through the centuries was wonderful. I found it completely compelling on all levels actually.

Shoplifters 2018
Brilliant in every way and I found it deeply moving. The script, the acting and the fact you don't really know what the story is until the end, as it unfolds from one story into another. It's a truly masterful piece of film making and very worthy of it's Cannes Palme d'Or prize. I saw it totally blind because of it's accolade and I'm really glad I did. It's not often I go to the cinema these days and leave with such a lasting impression.
It's my film of the year for 2018 and if you think you might like to see it, don't read the plot first

And now for some true bathos. Mark Wahlberg IS retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Bob Lee Swagger in 'Shooter'. “I’m just a peckerwood who lives in the hills with too many guns”
I really like this film. Some very funny lines, great action sequences and enough of a US political conspiracy plot to keep you interested. Entirely gratuitous - only 56 people die apparently but it feels like a lot more, think Rambo territory …

Mission Impossible: Fallout Remarkable for all the wrong reasons. Seriously, that's the LAST time I listen to anyone else's opinions about films! What utter dreck. How is this in any way anything but an insult to the original TV series? Where is the crack team of operatives? What about the slickly executed plan? The first film had a few redeeming qualities but this is, frankly, shit. Ok, it has one good fight scene.
The opening credits - ugh! Created by a crack team of primary school kids with crayons over a half hour break. When will producers understand where Simon Pegg does not fit into a film? In Star Trek, he works. Not in Mission Impossible. I could go on but I'll stop now.
2/10, only because there are worse films.

My top 3 films of 2018
1. The Favourite 2. Shoplifters 3. Leave No Trace
Narrowly missing out a place, Roma.
I was struggling to pick a winner until I saw The Favourite - an extraordinarily delicious film.

Tim, have you seen the new Mary Queen of Scots film?
I don't get out to the cinema much but I do like a good historical yarn, even if not entirely 'accurate', so am quite tempted by this ...

I was trying to remember anything of note from 2018 and I had to refer to this. Scanning down the list, I can only find Red Sparrow at #45 that was noteworthy. Enjoyable, rather than great cinema. So that's my list

Tim, have you seen the new Mary Queen of Scots film? "Mary Queen of Scots had its world premiere on closing night of AFI Fest on 15 November 2018, was released in the United States on 7 December 2018, and is scheduled to be in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2019"

I didn't list Three Billboards as it's a 2017 film.

Three Billboards felt like watching a stage play. Not one character seemed realistic imo. Especially from two great leads like Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand. Even a consistently poor simulation of a mothers grief and rage I thought. Maybe I don't get it but I watched the entire thing. Easily the weakest outting of director Martin McDonagh's films that I've seen imo. What am I missing?
