...Even old Hans Zimmer pulled his finger out and delivered a jaw dropping soundtrack which is almost divinely inspired. Sounded beautiful in stereo, I can only imagine the visceral impact in the cinema. theaudiostandard.net/post/274021/thread

But did he dance? Ha, he didn't do anything . . about as wooden as a wooden thing in a box full of wooden things!

Saw Dune 2 today.
Incredible picture and sound quality (Dolby Atmos) on the Cineworld SuperScreen - it's really worth the extra cost of these tickets.
Whilst it's certainly impressive in every way, overall it didn't click with me emotionally quite as much as the first. Saying that, it's still a veritable feast for the eyes - just one highlight is the gladiator scene shot on infrared which is incredibly effective.
I will definitely watch it again - I was perhaps a bit too tired to appreciate everything 100%. Hope to go again in a couple of weeks.

I saw Dune Part 2 this evening. Truly epic with scale and imagery worthy of the book (I refuse to compare it with the David Lynch or mini-series).
As with part 1, some superb casting (I always find Rebecca Ferguson mesmerising, while Chalamet and Zendaya remain excellent) and amazing set-pieces. This is a production to bask in despite it capturing the details well. Nicely ended, too, for those who don't know what happens next.
The soundtrack is stunning, especially that female 'Arabian' singing.

I very much enjoyed Master Gardener last night, streaming on Amazon Prime.
It's a gentle but powerful film from Paul Schrader with beautifully understated performances from Joel Edgerton and Quintessa Swindell as horticulturist and apprentice, both trying to escape the trauma of past lives. I found it rather moving.

I saw Dune Part 2 this evening. My additional thoughts are how well this portrayal showed the clear conflict between Paul and Chani in his Fremen leadership methods and then how hurt she is with Paul taking Irulan's hand in marriage, even though it's necessary; and the conflict between Paul and Jessica in not strictly following the Bene Gesserit ways and violating the rule of only women taking the water of life - and surviving. I don't remember either the Lynch or mini-series making these conflicts so clear.

May I recommend Wild tales its one that has slipped through the net, quite sublimely dark humour at its very best. Both Anne & myself saw this one at the NFTS in beaconsfield Saturday evening, and on the Friday we saw Zone of Interest at Pinewood again an alternative view of sad event in human history. Dune did zero for me, yes the effects were on point, the lead is weak but possibly eye candy for the under 40's female population, possibly due to the number of films we see in a year the big block busters are becoming jaded for us. Oppenheimer again really?, its not that good a film yes the actors are good plus Chris Nolan, but were not using there full ability to captivate the audience imho Mind you other Barbie and fluffy incorporated? ok for a mind numbing dross escapasim YES. Although there are a lot of films due for release in the coming weeks which look promising. This evening we are watching a members preview of drive away dolls by a single Cohan brother, (Ethan) think Thelma and Louise do route 66 crossed with pulp fiction and a smattering of the Soprano's

I think it's an outstanding film Martin, Chalamet really lived the part of Paul and carried off his 'coming of age' as it were perfectly, a very strong performance I thought. First time around I would have said it was on a par with Part One, but after a second viewing I think it's the stronger of the two now, I think Villeneuve has very cleverly put his own spin on Alia, as that was a disaster in Lynch's film. I think it's really one film though, with a long intermission - he seamlessly joined the two, which is no mean feat with such a long break between them. The sound is seat shudderingly good.
I think it's a masterpiece and he's not done yet! But as a big Villeneuve fan I would say that wouldn't I . . . .
EDIT: I am very tempted to go for a third time

Yes, Alia was very well done, and we get to see her as a teenager in a closing shot. Presumably we now move to Dune Messiah (=Part 3)? Oh, and I nearly forgot Chani leaving in anger and wrapping a blue headband around her arm, meaning she is pregnant (Leto II?). Powerful scene and you have to feel sorry for her.

I found Dune 1 much more engaging but I will see what a second viewing of 2 brings. The set pieces, whilst visually stunning felt quite familiar - the first part is much more opulent in my eyes and I enjoyed that as opposed to grittier 2.

I saw the new Hirokazu Kore-eda film yesterday, Monster. I'm a big fan of Kore-eda with past favourites including Shoplifters and Like Father, Like Son - Shoplifters particularly.
I think Kore-eda is a master storyteller, with nothing being obvious from the beginning and often a slowly unravelling plot, almost puzzle like as you piece together the relevant threads. This is one of his best in that regard, but I won't give much away regarding the story, as that would spoil it. An achingly beautiful score from Ryuichi Sakamoto, with this being his final work and the film is dedicated to him in the credits.
This might not be for everyone, especially if Japanese style film making isn't your thing, but I absolutely loved it and will be going again. 5/5

Thanks Tim, I was thinking about seeing this film and will add it to my list. The added bonus of a Sakamoto score is too much to resist.

I've got a copy of Dune (pt1) arriving today, the 4K version. As my current copy is a standard Blu-ray plus a 3D Blu-ray, I thought I'd better up my game. If anyone's interested, Amazon are currently flogging it for £15.99, which is 20% off.

Ford v Ferrari
This one is going to appeal more to petrolheads, although Ford beating Ferrari for four years in succession at the Le Mans 24 Hours with the GT40 was very big news at the time. The action sequences are mostly good, the characters are a bit hammed up but it's all very entertaining and it was a real milestone moment in motorsport.

Not a film I would immediately expect to appeal, but the trailer was interesting and I did enjoy Speed so...
