It's an extraordinarily good film Jules, quite subtle in places and grows the more you think about it. You're in good company too both Scorsese and Christopher Nolan have been singing it's praises recently. It's the only film I saw 3 times at the cinema last year
I have just seen Jonathan Grazer's new film too, The Zone of Interest. That is also quite extraordinary and deserves all the praise it's been receiving. Not a totally easy watch, very bleak and at times chilling, but exceptional nonetheless, especially the sound design. Glazer has made 3 really good films now and one not so good, but everyone deserves a day off.

I was due to see Zone of Interest at the BFI the other week but had to cancel sadly - expect I will need to catch it on streaming.

It would be worth seeing it in the cinema if at all possible, but I know that can be tricky for some.
It's in my best films of 2024 list, which is shaping up nicely with 4 in there already.

Watched "Sideways" this evening with my mum - one of my favourite films which I hadn't seen in many years and she had never seen it. I just love the humour in it, great ensemble cast - Paul Giamatti is such a fine actor and his latest, "The Holdovers", has been doing the business; my mum loved it in the cinema but I'm yet to see.
I'd recommend Sideways to anyone but if you love wine, it's an absolute must, as it's set in the California wine growing region and a LOT of drinking occurs...

Sideways is a special experience. I saw it once and fell in love and have been so picky in choosing when to rewatch it that I still havent seen it twice lol. I'll rewatch it this spring.
It's one of the best kinds of comedy. Its not about the punchlines as much as it is about the story with some laughs along the way.
The places they go and moments they share have stayed with me forever.

Very nicely put, Sir. I couldn't agree more.
I actually found the film even more poignant now that I'm older than the characters in the film. I think yesterday was the first time I truly appreciated the beautiful wine metaphor, I was previously caught up in just the laughs really ...
Paul G is a proper dude.

I have "Sideways" on DVD. Jeanette and I both loved it.

Love Sideways, in fact I watched it recently and it's still good - even bought the DVD back in the day.
I really didn't get on with The Holdovers though, which everyone but me seems to absolutely love . . . . go figure
I saw Perfect Days last week and really enjoyed that, but it might not have wide appeal. It's a very calm, contemplative film with no real plot - very observational and thought proving, like so much Japanese cinema. But oh my days, do they have some incredible public toilets in Tokyo!
Another film in my favourites of 2024 list, which numbers 5 now . . . should be 6 next week, as I hope to see Dune: Part Two if it's not too busy during the daytime shows.

I tried Dune the other day, lasted about 30-40 minutes, just couldn't get into it.
No interest in Part 2 obviously.
Mind you I was never a Herbert or sci-fi books fan when I was younger, I preferred Fantasy stuff like L Sprague De Camp, Robert E Howard, Philip Jose Farmer, Mike Moorcock etc

Oh . . . and I've seen The Zone of Interest twice now . . . a truly remarkable film - it just stays with you and I can't stop thinking about it. A film unlike anything I've seen before, especially one tackling the subject of the holocaust - I think it's a masterpiece. Definitely benefits from a cinema experience though, especially the sound. Not sure it'll have the same impact in a front room.
My film of the year so far.

Man From Earth
Imagine an SF film with no depiction of science, no special effects, no multiple locations. Just a bunch of intellectual friends gathering for a leaving celebration, provided the revelation that the leaver is 14,000 years old. What ensues is a philosophical debate on whether they can possibly believe him. It might not sound an interesting premise, but it draws you in with fascination.

The Zone of Interest.
Of course everyone who can see the film should do so, if at all possible.
I'm not going to say much more than that about it apart from I've never been affected by sound so much in a film before, both in the music composition and sound effects, foley work etc. Just one masterly aspect of the film which deserves recognition.
It made me hyper aware for a while after the film - the sound of my tyres on the road, the detail of water sloshing about in a bottle on the back seat was amplified beyond comprehension and then the sound of the washing machine at home.

Compared with Part 1 we found Dune Part 2 to be pretty underwhelming. Lots of big battles and the odd story line that didn't flow right and generally rather stereotyped in the good / bad presentation. Hopefully Part 3 will redeem it.

Wish the Lensman series could be put to film, well of course

Wish the Lensman series could be put to film, well of course EE "Doc" Smith? I read some of them, not bad. I would love some of Iain M. Banks' Culture novels to be tackled, they are Dune scale epics.
