The Infiltrator
Very good. Starring Bryan Cranston in a good way. A new favorite.

The Last Duel
An uncomfortable film in a way that I've only seen Ridley Scott pull off and through all of that what I've taken from it is how shocking Jodie Comer's ability to act is.

Not one of his best?
I've been meaning to watch it for so long ...

It's so strange tbh, it is good, but there are small sections that seem comical. For example Ben Affleck's inclusion is slightly odd sometimes but other times it's good.
But watching Jodie Comer's performance is worth it, there were a few moments so intense I was literally gripping a blanket that was near me.
I'd give it 7/10

Jodie Comer is an accomplished actress and her ability to mimic accents is incredible.

I looked at the awards for this film. It's a quite a few nominations and a handful of wins but for awards I'd never heard of before aside from the 'Critics Choice Award'.
I've heard almost zero chatter about this film anywhere.
After The Last Duel it will be appointment television for me to see whatever dramatic role she takes on next. Hopefully she will string together a few more performances like this.

LOL - you said her ability to act was "shocking" and I thought you meant it was awful!

🤣🤣🤣 sorry about that it does seem quite ambiguous how I wrote it.
It was disturbingly convincing. I can't believe that was acting. I swear I thought for a moment that maybe she is delusional and thinks it's really happening or that maybe that's what acting is - not going through the motions but actually generating the feelings inside and the body just follows?
Ahh my drunken thoughts at 5am are so precious lol

Perfect! Yes actors who can actually truly inhabit a character are the special ones. Frances McDormand comes to mind as well - her performance in 3 Billboards being a Prime example. The "acting" edifice is completely stripped away.

Jodie Comer is also good in Killing Eve opposite Sandra Oh.

Ahh yes you did mention this before Martin. I'll start checking youtube clips.
I'm not sure I've seen another actress in American cinema that can do what Comer can do.
Though, Bethany-Ann Lind starring in the film 'Blood On Her Name' may be at least heading in that direction. Another good film which also features the wonderful Will Patton.

My Mrs enjoyed that film but it rather did my head in and couldn't watch more than a small amount, it just didn't engage me at all. Me too Jules, I tried hard to get the love everyone else is feeling for Everything Everywhere, but couldn't get past 40 minutes. My film of the year for 2022 was Aftersun. An absolute masterpiece of a film for me.

My film of the year for 2022 was Aftersun. Paul Mescal was superb in Normal People. Thanks for the tip, I'll look out for it.

It's very subtle, very observational and the director Charlotte Wells confidently uses camera techniques very different to a lot of filmmakers.
It's beautifully everything a Hollywood film isn't, so it's not for everyone but I can't fault it. It does benefit from more than a single viewing.

Thanks Tim, added to my watchlist. I've seen it 4 times now Jules, twice at the cinema and twice on MUBI - I get a bit more from it each time. The director has put her short films on her website for viewing, Aftersun is her first full feature. Gives you a flavour of her style . . . she doesn't do exposition and she's a very visual director - all the clues are there. They're worth a look (there are three), if you don't like them or don't engage, you might not enjoy Aftersun. Laps is very impactive, she's definitely a very emotional and direct filmmaker. I'm very impressed by her in case you couldn't tell! I'd describe her as a minimalist. charlotte-wells.com/

One thing to note about Aftersun, is it's VERY un Hollywood. It's pure cinema, much more of a personal, thought provoking artistic sharing of a story, than an in your face, exposition filled extravaganza.

EDIT: have you tried the Spanish film Mirage? I really liked it, very thought provoking.
