The Cloverfield Paradox
After the dreadful The Adam Project comes another time travel / parallel universe film that's also below par. Taking just one thing from the original rather good Cloverfield, it features the by now confused script, poorly trained and downright loopy characters, disconnected science and bizarre single incidents all designed to lure audiences who probably rated the original, with loads of SFX to very little overall impact. I really am tired of these cereal box storylines aimed at people of little brain.
Where the original Cloverfield very cleverly explained almost nothing, this one is moronic in its use of standard tropes.
Watch it and weep.

Thanks I avoided Cloverfield as it didn't attract from the blurb
Keeping the fodder coming for the boss I endured Assassin's Creed- had it's very few moments Man of Steel - well made, but seen it all before
The better films become the more we can clearly see the dross

I should have added, Elizabeth Debicki makes it almost worth watching. Almost.

I'm being a real chicken about it, because I don't want to see the fire, but I've just rewatched the trailer to Ridley Scott's new film 'The Last Duel'. It looks intense and good especially with Scott at the helm. Has anyone seen it?

Ridley Scott directing and Jodie Comer acting seems like a good start.

All reviews I've read, all comments point to Jodie Comer. I've heard multiple times that she was overlooked at the Oscars and that she was able to convey more with just a look than many actors could with dialogue.
It might be the most powerful impression I've had of strong acting from seeing just a trailer.

I love her in Killing Eve.

Yes, Killing Eve was mentioned so many times in all that I'd read. And just learned that it's a show. Well, Season 4 is free on Prime.
That's ok I can watch an episode or 2 and purchase S1 if it's good/foxy enough. Then again, it's beautiful Jodie Comer.
The first film I'd seen her in was the comedy 'Free Guy' and she's great in it.

It's certainly foxy and she makes a great villain (called Villanelle).

Dune: Not quite remarkable.
It was good, don't get me wrong, and I'll definitely watch the second (and rumoured third) installments, but, ...I don't know, maybe I was expecting too much, maybe it would have been a different prospect in the cinema, but with a 55" telly and very decent 5.1 sound in my living room I can't see it being enough of a difference to elevate it to "remarkable" level. It just didn't seem to have that "WOW!" factor, and this is coming from a sci-fi movie devotee and lover of the book(s), to which it stuck pretty closely.
The 3D sucked by the way. They might as well have not bothered actually, and it made the picture quality quite murky in places. I ended up watching it in bog-standard HD, and for the next one, or two, I'll be purchasing the 4K format Blu-rays.

Shame. It was superb on a big 8K cinema screen (none of that 3D rubbish) and the music benefitted from a good sound system, too . I couldn't fault the cast or screenplay and I thought Zendaya was superb as Chani.

Yes, I completely agree about the cast, and the screenplay. They got the same guy who invented the languages for Game of Thrones to invent the language for the film, by the way, and one of those voices that Paul hears in his dreams is Marianne Faithfull. Everything about it was good, but I wanted it to be great, and it wasn't.

I wonder if we have become a lot more discerning after seeing truly wonderful fillums and it now takes a lot more to engage us.
Once upon a time for music we had the radio, then Top of the Pops once a week, Ready Steady Go was wonderful. We have 1000s more things now in music
Any sci fi films I was at the flicks all ready to go. James Bond, yes must go
These days it takes a lot to make me rate above 'uh' Thinking on James Bond, we watched the latest few days back To quote Peggy Lee - Is that all there is ?

Agreed, I found it so shallow and dissapointing.
So much hype, so little substance.
They really should have got Sam Mendes to direct again and finish the series on a high.

Ad Astra last night, wonderful cinematic work, not quite the hype surrounding it but good none the less. I've just watched Ad Astra and was pleasantly surprised. Quite introspective, slow paced and a bit of a thinker - my kind of film. It's mainly a Brad Pitt film and he played the part well. Some of the science is a little dodgy but not as much as many SF films, and his escape is quite far fetched, but the camera work and SFX are believable and it was an enjoyable couple of hours.

Yes I liked that one. It's a Sci fi in space with tons of SFX but feels like that is secondary to the main character's inner turmoil. Brad Pitt did really well here, his character does seem quite lost or detached.
In one scene while plenty of action is happening there is no sound. It makes it feel like he's barely noticing the moment.

I watched In Bruges for the first time in many years. Even better than the first time I saw it, I can appreciate it better now. The three central performances are just remarkable and so clever to make such a dark film in such a beautiful place - I really must visit. Essential viewing if you haven't had the pleasure.

One of my favourite films, Jeanette loved it too. If you're a fan of Brendan Gleeson, allow me to recommend " The Guard," which my sister-in-law in Ireland insisted we watch, and also a much earlier film, " The General".
