Black Butterflies - Netflix, French serial killer drama, starts off slow then bam off it goes, we’re only 2 episodes in but liking it a lot. Definitely NSFW Started this last night - the photography is absolutely beautiful ... Good acting too. I do wonder if even I have already guessed the premise of the whole thing though!

Three Pines, episode 1 - Not Earthshattering, but I wasn't expecting it to be. It bodes well for the future. Alfred Molina does, indeed, make an almost perfect C.I. Gamache as I remember him from the books. Twin Peaks has a lot to answer for ( we loved it back in the day ) but current programmes need to come up with something more original. Duck Lady - Log Lady Hick Lady Cop who’s not smart but is in a strange kind of way - Andy Strange Townspeople harbouring secrets/skeletons Blue Two Rivers - Laura Palmer Artist with controlling husband - Ray and his wife. I was just waiting for the pie and coffee, maybe in a later episode. Sometimes weird just comes across as silly, wasn’t sure if the locals were meant to be the comedy show to lighten the mood or not. Will stick with it but if Blue turns up wrapped in plastic them were out 😂 The "weirdness" quotient that made Twin Peaks special does rear its head in one or two of the stories (the books at least) but Three Pines as a whole is not reliant upon it. I really hope they don't push that angle with the TV series as it was not required to make a really good series of mystery novels. The duck is explained later on, or it should be, and has nothing to do with logs (or Owls ). Another thing that marked the books out from the crowd was the lack of sex and violence, and the concentration on the characters and their relationships with each other, that and Armand Gamache slowly falling in love with the place as he developed his own relationships within the village, and vice-versa.
I've just discovered that each pair of one-hour episodes equate to one of Peny's books, so this first series is looking to cram four books in. That means stuff will be skipped, which is not so great because the series of novels really is character-driven and there may not be sufficient time to develop the characters fully. As a fan, I hope they manage to get it right.

Godless - Netflix, for fans of westerns, brutal at times but some very good performances, easy to pick the 2 actors who won Emmys

Echo 3 Well made. We like it Echo 3 review"Echo 3" is a significant example of not judging a series by its first couple of episodes, whether one loves what it's doing or not. It initially seems like it's cut from a familiar cloth about military men using their decorated skills to protect their deepest bonds. The first episode is about a messy mission in Afghanistan to rescue a hostage, and the night before that fateful trip—a wedding. Amber (Jessica Ann Collins) marries Prince (Michiel Huisman). She tells her brother Bambi (Luke Evans), "He's not just another guy in your unit. He needs to come back to me." "Echo 3" initially sells itself with that central emotional focus and that military might, which also creates a dull ease that this will later be a story about special forces men becoming action heroes. (And all the ads are filled with creator Mark Boal's credits for writing "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty.") But "Echo 3" is savvier, more complicated, and more sensitive on a worldly scale than however it may initially present itself. Found after we watched Slow Horses and Apple TV recommended it. Need to investigate Apple more as we have seen good stuff there

I've finally started the second series of "Slow Horses," and it's going to be as brilliant as the first series on the strength of episode #1 Shame they killed off one of my favourite actors so quickly though.

Keep an eye out for "Three Pines" coming to Prime Video on Dec 2 nd. I very much enjoyed the series of books it's taken from, and I think Alfred Molina will make a good Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Intriguingly, a regular character from the books - Isabelle Lacoste - is -played in the series by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, who is a member of the Kainai First Nation (Blood Tribe, Blackfoot Confederacy) as well as Sámi from Norway. So, there's your " Scandi" link guys. It's set in Canada, Quebec to be precise. I could only manage one ep of this. It's a bit like Midsomer Murders set in Quebec apart from the actors in MM are in on the joke. Some truly wooden acting and dialogue - it's a curious mix of hamming it up and proper acting; surprised to see Alfred Molina in it, he deserves much better!

I'm rather enjoying the change of pace, Jules; decent mysteries without the need for constant explosions and car-chases, because they have actual plots. Maybe it helps that I already "know" the characters from the books. I do take your point about Midsummer Murders though, it had occurred to me too. Maybe a cross between Midsummer, and Maigret.

I'll be onto Deadwind series 2 soon.
Pihla Viitala as Sofia Karppi😍 Lauri Tilkanen as Sakari Nurmi grew on me and became really quite dependable! Even his shitty old 850i 🙂
Read somewhere series 3 is in the offing. Joo, joo, kiitos!

I'll watch to the end but only to see how clichéd the ending is, it surely can't get any worse.

Slow Horses, series 3 will happen. In fact, it's even better news, s3 and s4 have been commissioned together.

All three seasons of Undercover proved to be superb.
Then Netflix popped up with a new suggestion called Ferry. Could it be...? Yes, it's about the key baddie from Undercover in his past life and how he meets Danni, his major love in Undercover.
