I couldn't sleep last night and tried Normal People on iPlayer (and Hulu) just on a whim. I ended up watching the first three episodes.
I have rarely seen such a beautifully constructed relationship story, of two people circling each other into falling in love as sixth formers and then through into their university lives. What makes this series so special is the completely stand-out performances by the two lead actors. With their realistic conversations, hang-ups and u-turns, it takes me right back to my own student days. The direction and photography are also breathtaking.
Daisy Edgar-Jones does a remarkable transformation from gangly ill at ease schoolgirl to stunningly alluring undergraduate, not just in the way she looks but in her manner and mode of speech. There is also a dramatic swing in fortunes between who is out of place and who is alpha from school to university, as well as shifts in point of view between episodes. This is the kind of series that I know will linger long after I've finished watching it.

Just an FYI: If you haven't already heard, Star Trek: Picard, has been renewed for a second series. What I didn't realise was that the (good) news was actually released last December.

I have a new "guilty pleasure" on Amazon. It's "Upload" and here's the trailer. It doesn't hurt that female lead Andy Allo is rather lovely. Some of the language, and a few of the situations are "adult" in nature, but that only adds to the level of humanity the script brings to the characters in my opinion. Don't misunderstand me, it's no great work of cinematic art but in the midst of mass-produced 21st century romcoms (which I normally avoid like the plague) it stands out. There are some genuinely hilarious moments, even if a few of them are telegraphed. I'm pleased to say that there will be a "series 2" as well. Here's the basic premise, if you hadn't worked it out from the trailer:

Just started The Capture on BBC iPlayer. Pretty intriguing story of an army soldier who has just been released after a false accusation of murder. After celebrating his release, he follows his pretty barrister home. CCTV appears to capture footage of him assaulting and kidnapping her just before kissing her. What really happened?
Good opening episode.

Excellent drama, like Spooks on steroids.

The Capture. Just. Brilliant.
I really liked Holliday Grainger in the key role. And Famke Janssen is still hot.

I've almost finished series two of The Orville, and have just got the good news that it's been renewed for a third season. Marina Sirtis turned up in the episode I watched tonight, and the episode itself was directed by Jonathan Frakes. I've just watched S2 E1: did they lose some of their humour? I thought a lot of it fell flat. Hope it gets better.

I seem to remember that series two started out taking a tilt at some more "serious" situations, and didn't always hit the right intergalactic windmills. It was a while ago now that I watched it, but I do remember enjoying the series as a whole. I certainly watched to the end.

Me too Jules This is well worth the watch Be prepared to be confused - can be good to be totally confused as you work your way through a good drama

I watched it because everyone in the media was reporting that she got her kit off!

I kinda dismissed Upload as too trashy (as if Killjoys, Dark Matter and Continuum weren't 😂). Might try it. Capture not up Marie's street I fear.
We just finished Trigonometry iPlayer - Threesome anyone?
I'm watching Salvation (Netflix). Love a good asteroid wiping out humanity series (sarcasm) 🙂 takes my mind right off Covid-3019
(Sorry, I don't do cultured and eloquent reviews here🤣)

Do try Upload A few shocks and a lot of things to think about We watched it until the last episode left us wanting more
The boss and I both liked Capture. How many episodes convinces you it's not for Marie ?
We liked Trigonometry a lot. Not really our sort of thing but well done and draws you in.
