I bought a Flir 1 thermal imager for the iPhone 5 / 5S to use in my heating work.
My iphone is a 5C. When I contacted Flir they said it doesn't fit the 5c. So I went about trying to find a 5 or 5S at reasonable cost on the second hand market. there is a plethora about.
in the event the Flir arrived and it turns out to work perfectly well on the 5c, just needs a little fettling to make the 5c fit it properly.
All the same, too late, because like the usual both feet in first Paul Barker approach I BIN'd a £100 5S that had a dead battery.
After buying it the brain kicked into gear and frightened me to death that there was no way of telling it hadn't been disabled, never to be recovered, in which case I had spent £100 on a little hardware the sum of the parts nowhere near £100 worth and never liklely to be worth anything to me.
So against my moral code I had unwittingly become a gambler. I was no better than the backer of a horse willing it to go well.
Anyway I googled a bit and I left it on charge, and managed to get it connected to iTunes and on the third attempt at restoring it (to get rid of original users pass code that weren't provided, and the seller gone silent on me!) worked. So I no longer have a £100 brick.
I've ordered a battery, doesn't appear to be as difficult to do as it used to be last time I broke apple devices trying to change batteries.
Seems to be simplocked. Won't take my EE sim. Seller had said "it's unlocked because it is from carphone wherehouse, but I think it was on 02" I contacted him to say it is simlocked and he didn't reply.
Anyway GIFGAFF sim is on order, just in case it is 02. Battery is on order. phone is not yet a brick.
There is hope. But what a stupid gambler I am.
I suppose if it works out for a few quid over £100 I got a result.
Other ulterior motive for wanting another iphone (other than it being better to have one that fits FLIR1 properly) is to use it as a tracker in my van should it be stolen. a few of us guys that work from vans have come up with this method. Tape an iphone under the dash permanently on charge. If get up in morning, van gone, get on find my iphone. The resolution should be sufficient to find a van. Go and spot it, then call the police.
Anyway not out of the woods yet. Progress reports will be forthcoming as the steps to success or to failure are taken one at a time.......

You're probably right. In this technology I am a blind lemming follower. I suspect iphone owners all seem to have an old one lying around. I am new to iphones.

Still waiting waiting.
But my newly ordered Leatherman Surge arrived today so I am happy with that.
Lost my Gerber running with Roxy (5 month old Staffie). Can't do without a multitool so as I have plenty of work on, which means can afford the indulgence, went for an upgrade.
Quite often a multitool on my belt saves a trip down from a loft down to the toolbox. Sadly boilers in lofts are a growing cancer.

Boilers in lofts doesn't sound too clever to me Saves some space but free heat going to waste. Anything else ?

Pain in the but for the repair man.
Usually fitted in lofts by morons without enough brain cells to repair boilers, so they will never be back to the house.
I have closure on the iphone 5s.
I killed it proper good.
Studied the utube on how to change the battery.
Did it go anything of the sort? Did it fek!
First problem, after prising home button end open and lifting it hard to the vertical angle as described by the utube moron. Pulled a part a connector leed he never mentioned or showed in his video, and snapped it dead.
Then the moron on another video said how easy it was to lift battery by plastic tab.
anyway my battery no tab, and stuck fast with sticks like sh1t. So put my nice new Letaherman to work and in the process shorted the battery which then proceeded to combust and give off pungent black smoke and red hot fire.
Being a total idiot I stupidly closed the whole thing up thinking to starve the fire of oxygen. So in process giving heat an opportunity to cremate the whole darned thing.
Ho hum. I just knew it was a stupid idea.
Anyway £100, cheap lesson under the circumstances.
I'll stick to 1930's electronics. I seem better at that!

On the bright side I have plenty of valuable valves.
Anyone want a couple of px4's for an unlocked 5s that doesn't need a battery?

Hate to say it but that's funny as fuck!
Love yer honesty. Bags of respect from me for that.
Shame about yer phone though.
I had a Staffie for years as well - great dogs. Mine was jet black throughout and called Bronx.

I'm OK about it. Not in a bad mood at all. I can afford to loose £100. Many people can't.
Just some lessons in life we need to learn more than once.
Many years ago I tried changing parts in Samsung SII's and ipod touches. They never worked again either.
Never again!

OTOH when I make a valve amp it always works right from the start.
Some things I can to from the top of the head and some things I can't.
I do think these idiots on you tube need a phone stuck up their rear sideways.
Edit ... a spontaneuously combusted phone!

Well im a Ludite Dinosaur.
I have a cheap knokia (never switched on) for emergency use only (Taxi at closing time) etc... And would be happy to return to the good old days of no mobiles & Red Phone Boxes. The fukers with mobiles phones permanently stuck to their napper piss me off. Sorry just felt like a wee rant.
Nice Dog though.
