Staffs have always had good reputations but what's changed is the amount of twats crossing them with pits to make them mean.
Buying from a reputable breeder with a good, well regarded pedigree and the ability to meet the parents and there shouldn't be a problem. As usual it's arseholes that have ruined a breeds reputation.

It's not that I'm a snob. It's just that we decided to get a puppy so my son could train her up as his dog with him the leader of their pack. It has worked really well. She knows she is subordinate to the whole family but she is always on her best behaviour for Sam. We met the mother and the family. It all fits. We Googled the Sire Diesel Delight, he's a fairly popular Blue staffie. Non of the litter came out blue. Mum is a short legged Brindle. Roxy has Dad's bone structure mum's brindle but with the black. All her siblings look the same too. The whole litter was adorable.
We tried one rescue dog who was mouthy. that didn't conscern us. The problem was he got aggressive towards Sam three times over a few days, and it escalated each time. I could control him, but Sam had to keep shouting for help. We tried him for a week but I excercised the right to take him back after the trial. Mainly because my wife is week with an illness that won't go away.

No mate, mines an Alaskan Malamute. Bigger, heavier and meaner than huskies. Not on the dd list however we deliberately keep a bit aggression in him as a big part of his job is guarding the house and mrs Chris when I'm away. As a result he's pretty mean but that suits us. Interesting point about pedigrees - I had the same as you,the 5 gen paperwork and when I got Bronx(1990ish) I also picked up a book on Staffies and there was a pic of his great, great, great grandad in it and you could see the resemblance!
I fucking loved that dog. Got him up to about 31/2 stone with a 22" neck and he was well fit. Titus weighs in at about 58/60kg the now and he's super strong as well. A right handful if I'm honest! Good fun though.

A friend has a Jap Akita dog. Don says he has to have a fight with Codie once a week to show Codie Don is still top of the pack. They are on the dangerous list.
Since then I have been in a house with Akitas where they have had two generations of Akitas and absolutely love them. But they warned me, one day totally out of the blue the dog took an 8 year old boy by the arm and nearly tore it off.
They did mention the two main types of Akita one lot is smaller and I think they are known as the American ones. Or it may be the other way around. Usually the American's breed bigger, like the American Bull Mastiff and the American Staffie (which is not the Pitbull, though I'm not sure if they bread the pit from that line)
Regarding Pits, I have a friend with two and they are the safest dogs I've been around. Even more people safe than Staffies in my experience.
Not very dog friendly!

Mods can move all dog talk on this thread if it suits them. Or it doesn't bother me if it stays put.
In my eclectic mind I am happy to allow my threads to twist and turn like a normal conversation.
But I am aware there are people who get very annoyed about off-topic directions within a subject title, and don't do this to offend them. I do it because of the mind I have. So if one of those asks for it to be cleaned up, be my guest.

Too many gits and know nothings take on dogs - have children even ! We had a big wake up watching Cesar Milan, Dog Whisperer and now have way more control on the pack of 6. They are happy too. I'm told Cesar's methods have been updated, waiting to see Sally told me this morning she wants a Lurcher, just seen on our local rescue dog site !

We had dog wars with Nellie and Rosie as she grew up from a pup. Watching Cesar Milan showed us Sally needed to show her authority, she has ME and can be very bad at times. The dogs spot it. Too a while, worked. Not a problem with me as they always knew I was serious. I wanted us to be able to house any dog and hopefully we are managing it. Keeps us happy and the dogs appreciate it too
