You can adjust the volume start for Spotify in settings, so it comes out on maximum when you start up. Really glad you got it working and sounding really good. It becomes very addictive

Hehe, it's doing something really weird with certain tracks mixes. Most are totally fine. Only had two weird ones so far..
Some instruments are totally recessed, other are normal, some more forward.. very strange. It's like they are 3d distance from you wise..
Perhaps it's the lack of good clocking from Rpi..?
Have to Google this one I think.

I find the level of depth is very variable at this level of resolution. I'm playing Yello's Touch and the soundstage is so up front it practically reaches my nose.
Try playing a test tone or sweep in Spotify and readjust your levels?

Try playing a test tone or sweep in Spotify and readjust your levels? No, it's weirder and more pronounced than that! Not heard anything like it before on other Spotify streaming setups.

It's the depth, I tell you! Better than any CD I ever heard. The soundstage can be huge and engulfing.

Hehe, no. It makes a few tracks unlistenable. I expect Kali reclocker will fix it.. we'll see.

Ok, it does sound like a strange phenomenon so perhaps something is still not quite right in the I2S connection, although you'd think it would either work or fail. Re-clocking is something to look forward to based on my findings.

Re-clocking is something to look forward to based on my findings. That's my feeling too. Tracks that sound weird are Can't you hear my knocking - The Rolling Stones (the very upfront guitar riff is almost not there, as if in an echoey box 50 yards behind the rest). You And Your Friend - Dire Straits (again recessed, echoey sound to some instruments). Most tracks are quite okay / some sound great but for the artifacts sound, more noticeable on some tracks than others, and then there are a few that are only a bit strange.. In the meantime my 12v linear supply for the router has arrived! I'm going to move the music loft router a bit nearer to the HiFi. Then I can run two normal length Lan cables, one to ChromeCast Audio and one to Rpi.. Do you power your router off the same block as you Hifi Martin, John and others? Roll on Kali reclocker! In the meantime I'm reading up on Rpi -> I2S DAC probs but have not found an exact match on my sound woes.

No, my router's linear PSU goes into a separate wall socket. Keep that well away from power for the main system. Snap chokes on both the mains and DC sides, too.

I've kept them apart but it probably on the same ring anyway, will continue to do so. Here's what Jean Louis (DiyAudio) wrote about the sound issues on some tracks "I have the same exact strange behaviour on some old Beatles songs, singer almost disappears ? I checked the tracks on other systems and everything is right." If Kali doesn't fix it I'll have to roll up my sleeves and do more Linux crap

Very upfront guitar riff on full right channel. Big drums, fantastic soundstage. Is it a channel issue?
Guitar intro hard left, quiet cymbal hard right. Mellow guitar then comes in on the right. Again, channel issue?

Had lots of Volumio problems not showing up in Spotify device list see Rpi thread..
However, when it does work, it absolutely slays the ChromeCast Audio using Spotify, SQ wise!

Again, channel issue? No I don't think so. It's as if all the information is there, all the instruments are present, just not correct. Like the information of what to put where and how loud has become mixed up. I don't know how I2S is organised.. I worked on PCM and CCITT7 a fair bit at Ericsson and can imagine what's going on if the clock is all to hell!

Ah, ok. Let's hope the Kali sorts it out (should do, she's quite fierce).

I had a little play around with Rpi again this evening. Same problem getting Volumio to show up in the device list in Spotify.. Several restarts in Volumio to get it to show.. In fact it just won't show at all on my phone. But it will on our painfully slow Kindle fire 5th gen.. very strange.
I tried selecting a few different DACs instead of the genericI2S in Volumio. Some worked, Hifiberry, an Rpi one and a Volumio one. Many did not. All had the same sound problem on the problem tracks, so it's not that!
When I'm going to listen regularly again, after Xmas, I'll leave the Rpi running all the time and see if that cures the Volumio not showing problem, as once there it might always be there.
In the meantime I put Chromecast Audio on - will a bit more treble in the Google home app it sounds quite lively..

I take it all of your devices are on the same wi-fi/cable network, not operating over 4G?
Saying that, I seem to be able to send music to Volumio even when I'm at work.

Yes, same routers. The Sonos system is on Lan to one of them and then they run their own independent mesh network and keep themselves to themselves. We have two ChromeCasts on WiFi and 2 Echo dots also on WiFi. The ChromeCast Audio and the Rpi are on their own Lan. WiFi in Rpi is disabled.
I can have Volumio connected via my phone or pc (on WiFi), do all settings, select music in Volumio but nothing will play, and Spotify won't see Volumio either when it's like that. Eventually I can get it to play and be seen (after a random number of restarts).. It's as if not all the routines needed in Volumio have booted..
