today windows 10 decided to reinvent itself on my computer. I can't see this text as I type it, I hope it shows up for you. Some characters are missing from other people's messages. Not just on this forum but on other's also.
No doubt they will sort it.

the good news is that after I hit post quick reply the text is made visible. It's a nbit like writing in invisible ink.

I would reboot the machine. Remember it's a Tech Preview so there are bound to be bugs.

It hasn't affected Chrome, just IE and Firefox.

Not a problem, then. Always worth having an alternative browser installed for oddities.
I'm getting no issues here with IE11 on my tablet, so it's likely to be a W10 bug.

Martin when I had 7 running I was using Microsoft Security Essentials.
But there isn't a version of it for 10. Do I assume that Microsoft are dealing with security in this evaluation version? Or am I now wide open? suddenly not feeling very secure.

Windows Defender (previously Microsoft Security Essentials) is a full-blown AV built-in to Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10. Just look in the Control Panel. There is no longer any need to install anything, just perform an update of the definitions.

One problem that I have with MS Security essentials and Defender is that I have not yet figured out how to configure the firewall. So I use Zonealarm firewall instead.

You just configure the firewall in Control Panel as normal, and if Defender pops up a security alert you can tick the box to say all is ok and always allow. That's what I've done in the past.

The Consumer Preview of W10 will be released in early 2015. It will include a new Start screen, Continuum mode switching between desktop and tablet and possibly the excellent Cortana voice recognition system from Windows Phone.

Don't know if this is a suitable place to ask, but here goes anyway. I'm still using Windows XP for all my business critical stuff (not connected to the net, so hopefully it's safe at the moment), I've got all the software I need on that machine, but I suppose I need to keep up with 'progress'. So my question, if I get a new machine I guess I'll need to buy a whole new suite of software - which is making me wonder whether I should switch to a Mac (mini?) based system. I've got an iPad and am very happy with it.
What are people's thoughts / experiences?
Cheers. Bill

It depends on which software you need to be able to use, or tasks that you need to carry out. There are a lot of programs out there that are free, and a lot of old Windows software that can run on Windows7. But if you got XP, then you might wish to wait for W10. I am still using W7 on two laptops because I can't get some of my important programs to run on W8.

The business I contract for changed from XP to 7 because XP is no longer supported.
The systems we use as field workers is now considerably faster running but there are issues/glitches which are very very frustrating. On balance I would be happier with XP as the basis again because of two specific issues which make my life Hell when I am already under stress with a situation and am in great need of communications. Two things usually happen simultaneously at such moments of stress. 1/ it decides I am entering the incorrect password. the only solution to which is a hard reboot. 2/ it decides after it has attempted to "connect" through the gprs network on a particular group of masts and failed, it gives up trying the only fix for which is to get in the van and drive to anouther area and reboot the machine.
In short some sort of ifiot got his hands on the design of the new platform and decided something would make it better which has in the event given the field worker such a headache at critical times it is vertually enough to quit the company and take his skills elsewhere. It is getting very close!
Never have been a fan of the results of peoples bright ideas that don't actually do the job!

Back on Widnows 10.
Screen freezes quite often say twice a week? Forced hard reboot by holding on button until it reboots is only way out. After which doesn't always boot up, but sits in grey screen no cursor ad infinitum. So further forced hard boot sometimes two more required, then it comes back.
No matter. They'll sort it.
Very very happy with 10 on my personal puter and will definitely accept it as a permanent system when they offer it to me. Leagues ahead of 7.

Well, you'll get no argument from me as I think W8.1 is leagues ahead of W7 and W10 is better still!
