Finally just been offered the 2004 Feature Update on my Surface. I guess the driver or other issues have been resolved. Interesting that it came up just after a cumulative update (2020-08) earlier today.

I've just picked up a cheap laptop on eBay. (£145.00) Sony VAIO (PCG-71211M) - Intel Core i5 430M - 4GB RAM - 256GB Crucial SSD - 17.3" 1920x1080 display - AMD HD 5000 dedicated GPU - Blu-ray drive - 4 USB ports - E-Sata port - HDMI and VGA ports - LAN and WiFi - Windows 10 64-bit pro installed It looks pretty clean, and " The laptop had light use every four months for a specific client (InDesign and Photoshop catalogue design)." according to the listing. I think it's pretty well specced for what I've paid. Only one question remains. I wonder if it's been updated to 2004.

That's a pretty good spec for the money. Double the RAM and you'll have a pocket rocket. I can report that 2004 is solid and stable on all my machines

New laptop fired up, and is currently 87% of the way to updating to 2004. For many years I've cursed laptops as the "Spawn of Satan," and to be honest, nothing has changed my mind. This one is just a semi-necessary evil. I've hated every touchpad I've ever used (cheap wireless mouse on the way) except those on the couple of Chrome Books I've owned, which don't replicate mouse buttons, and where everything is achieved using basic gestures, much like on a touch screen. The machine itself is clean as a whistle; you'd be hard pressed to tell it from a new laptop in fact. Like an idiot, I forgot to ask how the memory was configured before I bought it, and so I had to wait until the machine arrived before I could update to 8GB. It's currently got 2x2GB modules, so I've ordered 2x4GB modules to replace them, from Amazon/Komputerbay. That cost me a whole £29.00 I've also ordered one of those laptop-stand-cum-cooler thingies. I'd quite forgotten how much hot air one of these things can chuck out. Almost as much as me in fact, so I'll shut up for now now.

I've upped the memory from 4gb to 8gb today, and the little wireless mouse has arrived. Gawd I missed that thumb-wheel, even though I was only without it for a couple of days. I really do hate track pads.
I've installed Kodi, with my favourite Titanium build and the playback quality is excellent. It also boots up at lightening speed. My laptop stand/cooler arrives tomorrow and that's me done. I'll probably install a couple of tools, like IObit Uninstaller and WinRAR, and possibly Spybot, but other than that I want to keep it fairly clean.
It's my first experience of a Sony Vaio, and I'm impressed so far, especially as it's essentially a 10-year-old machine.

My laptop stand/cooler has arrived and surprisingly (to me at least) it actually seems to work. Air being blown out of the laptop is noticeably cooler. I've decided to go the whole hog and get a brand spanking new battery too. According to Yodel "Your parcel is with one of our drivers for delivery," and the "estimated delivery date" is Monday. The driver may be carrying my battery on a cart pulled by sloths.

... Wondering why you need one Paul Pure laziness, Mike. It's so I'll have a dedicated high-quality source for telly in bed. It probably won't get used a great deal, but its there if I want it. Next year's Olympics is in Tokyo, so stuff may be on at some weird times. It's much easier to reach out of bed and grab the laptop then it is to get up and go downstairs to watch the beach volleyball.

I find with old laptops it is well worth opening them up and vacuuming the innards. Amazing how much gunk is in there slowing the laptop down and creating heat.

I was looking at Update on my old Lenovo lappy and although it said last checked 30/9/2020 there were some 1903 fixes. About half of them downloaded and installed, 3 would not. Then I was offered 2004 which I chose. After a longish process all installed. CPU stuck on 98% for ever due to Windows Search Indexing (seem to remember disabling that before), did likewise again (under computer management, and all fine down to a couple of percent CPU when not doing anything. Disk is 0% unless doing something.
2 machines to go.

For Lenovo laptops, install the Lenovo store app. It's brilliant and offers BIOS and other updates not available in Windows Update. It'll bring your laptop right up to date. We use it on our Lenovo fleet at work and it saves you a lot of manual searching for updates.

I already had Vantage Not sure but it seemed to be up to date. However when I clicked for updates it spent a few minutes and rebooted a couple of times.
Do I need to update manually ?

If it says no more updates to do, then you're fine.

Just to be clear: you need to apply all the Lenovo updates and all the Windows updates, then you're done.
