There are three other folders to empty on occasions to prevent crap from building up (assuming a standard C: drive): C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp (substitute <username> with your profile folder name) C:\Windows\Temp C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download (but only after applying all outstanding Windows Updates) You can find gigabytes in the above folders on a well-used machine which has not been kept clean. The issue is not the storage (hard disk capacity is cheap), it's the filling up of the directory system with tens of thousands of rubbish file entries. Already done all that to! I have now installed Auslogic Boostspeed and it really works! MUCH better than any of the other 6 or so utilities I've tried before. At a guess the machine is running a third faster easy. Boostspeed is paid for isn't it ? Are you trialling it ?

I still cannot bring myself to trust cloud storage options completely, what with the ever increasing skill of hackers and the ease with which seemingly they can gain access to cloud servers, that's a lot of personal information for them to chew on. I agree that a house fire could destroy all your personal data too so I suppose it comes down to which is the more likely scenario. My money is on a hack attack. The strategic pitfalls of network computing are addressed in the sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica where a Battlestar's computers are not networked to avoid Cylon infiltration, perhaps Hackers should be renamed Cylons

You're right, it's a toss-up between home-based and cloud-based security and reliability. For me, the access-anywhere availability trumps it.
In one seminar at Microsoft, I was impressed to hear that even Microsoft employees are not allowed into the cloud storage centres, which are run by a few dedicated staff in high security.
I liked that aspect of BG, the paranoia over Cylon penetration of their systems. Epic series.

I suppose I am a bit of a 'stick-in-the-mud' in some ways but for good reason. I like my privacy so entrusting my personal data to systems and strangers thousands of miles away just seems a bit silly to me, although I do get the convenience of having everything in one place. That's a bloody big basket of eggs though. I signed up for Netflix a couple of days ago and I'm currently working my way through BG in its entirety. I'm in total agreement with you, BG is probably the best of its genre, although Babylon 5 comes damned close

Don't forget Breaking Bad on Netflix - it was a hard call, but after a second viewing of the whole series, I have just ranked that over The West Wing as the #1 best TV drama.

I've got series 1 of BB but I haven't really got on with it. Banshee is so much better, for instance.
When there are series like Game of Thrones and Homeland still going, BB doesn't get a look-in!

I dislike Homeland with a passion Martin, that fecking woman makes me want to scream - she's a really appalling actress IMO. BB might take awhile to grab you, I watched the entire series first time round in 11 days (62 episodes). Second time round I enjoyed it even more, it really is quite dark and there are some real human behavioural conundrums in there, gripping drama of the highest order in my book.
You should give it another go Martin, it made the 2014 Guinness Book of Records as the highest rated show of all time. I know you like TWW, so it should work? I didn't rate it #1 first time round as I love TWW and have seen that right through about 4 times now, but BB is a bit special when you get to know the characters.

Loved BB and Games of Thrones both take time to get into. Did not get into Homeland. I really recommend Lillyhammer quirky but good. The second series is really good.

As PB says, the apparent fast boot of Windows 8 is a bit of a con, because it shows you the logon screen when it's actually only part way through the boot and does the rest in the background. I noticed that if you log on immediately there's quite a delay until the user logon has completed. It looks to me that the total process is about the same speed as Windows 7. Anyway does it really matter ? A few years ago we'd have given anything for a boot time as quick as we get today. I used to start up the PC then go make coffeee while waiting ! The BG terminal (CF19) has just been upgraded from XP to 7 (because XP is no longer supported.)
SO it boots faster, but the touchscreen has gone to pot. Can't hit the target, won't calibrate. It give sa load more flexibility regarding connections but connection to Vodaphone in many areas is still complete pants. I have to keep teathering it to my personal Orange mobile to get jobs sent down. Vodaphone need shooting.
You only boot once a day. XP may take 15 minutes to boot and be ready for work, but you get out of bed turn it on do the 5 S's and it's ready and waiting, simples.

I think it's a terrific series myself and so does the missus who has the condition, she can totally relate with the character.

the apparent fast boot of Windows 8 is a bit of a con, because it shows you the logon screen when it's actually only part way through the boot and does the rest in the background. It's not a con as you can start logging in once the login screen is showing. The fact that some modules are still starting up is irrelevant, you can start work sooner.
However, don't go thinking that W10 is just about startup speed. It is functionally much faster at the core and is tremendously richer in functionality. The built-in Mail, Calendar and People are often all you need, all held in the back-end of outlook.com so that everything is shared by your devices. Notifications are built-in, too. Integration with the cloud is inherent. PDF reader is free, as are many apps from the Microsoft Store. In fact, you could take the W10 OS, add a few freebies and get lots of work done. Did I mention that it's stable and fast? You really cannot compare this with W7, let alone the agricultural XP.
It's a new world out there.
