I actually used W10 all day today, with SIMS and Office 2013 installed, just to see if I could do work without noticing what's underneath. It worked very well: fast and without error once I installed the Windows Update that had already appeared this morning to fix slow network browsing.
Sony laptops - just say no.

I am actually quite fond of Sony Vaio laptops. I use an uninstaller to remove the unwanted extras that comes with their OS installation. My main laptop is now their Flip 15A, which I have upgraded with a 512SSD.

Has the availability of drivers improved Stanley, as that was my main beef with them? To be fair they are visually appealing, which was why I chose it, but not being able to easily locate drivers was a deal breaker for me.

I haven't had any problems with getting drivers. Their support site always lists the original drivers, plus the Sony Update software checks for new drivers automatically.

Once you play with Lenovo ThinkPads, most other laptops seem a bit crappy by comparison. My older ThinkPad Edge 11 has been moved around, beaten and battered and gets loaned out for display duties and yet it's never put a foot wrong. That's why I continue to buy them for all staff.

As long as they don't mess up the boot time from shutdown state. My reasonable spec Lenovo lappy will boot with Win8.1 in ~8 secs flat from completely shutdown. It's one of the features I like. I find W8.1 in desktop mode no prob at all. The integration / sharing with multiple PC's / phone and the Onedrive experience is great.
Win7 drives me mad - it's sooooo sloooooooow!
When the time comes, I'm def up for W10:)
Another big thumbs up for Lenovo. I have an old X200 warhorse with Win8.1, my daughter has one too with Win 7, plus I have a G500 (Win 8.1) for streaming TennisTV and Jriver;)
As long as you take the keyboard off the X200's once a year and blow the dust out with an airline (hold the fan blades still), they go on forever and run cool.
I'm just using USB3 and seeing speeds of close to 100Mbit/s backing up my entire music lib.

For Big bang theory lovers... Howard: Raj, did you ever tell your sister about the time Sheldon got punched by Bill Gates? Priya: Oh, God, you’re kidding. Raj: Nope. Gates gave a speech at the university. Sheldon went up to him afterwards and said, maybe if you weren’t so distracted by sick children in Africa, you could have put a little more thought into Windows Vista.” Leonard: Bam. Right in the nose. Made me proud to own a PC.

I love W8.1's speed. 6s to boot from powered off on my desktop PC at home (with an SSD drive, of course). The good news is that W10 appears to be just as fast.

I now have Windows 7 Pro and it boots up quick enough for me, just as quick as my partners laptop with Windows 8.1.
Must admit XP was good enough for me until recently.

The usual paranoid bollocks. This is nothing different, if you use a Microsoft account them certain tracking data goes back to them to help with search results and suggestions.
It's a bit like a policy rule we have for our students, that allows us to read their mail in exceptional circumstances. The girls often ask me "so do you read our mail" to which I reply "do you really think I have the time or care to read thousands of messages per day"?

As an aside, how private are private messages on this forum ?

I've never tried to look at any members' PMs and nor would I ever want to. My understanding after a quick look, is that neither moderators or administrators are able to gain access to them, however Proboards are able to.

I do not have access to private messages and would not want this feature. My view point is that private stays private

As an aside, how private are private messages on this forum ? We (Administrators) cannot access them. ProBoards Admins can, but only to rescue situations. I have seen them asked about copying a forum Administrator (of another forum) on a PM and they've refused. So I would say that PMs are as private as your personal e-mail account(!)
I agree with Chris and John, I would never wish to read a member's PMs. I can name at least one hi-fi forum where PMs are regularly read as I was kicked out on the basis of what I said in private to another member.
