What are the albums which you bought because of their reputation, mega sales figures and perhaps the importance of the artist. But no matter how hard you try, you can't see what all the fuss is about. You know you should love it, but no matter how many times you listen to it, you just can't seem to enjoy it as much as the rest of the world so obviously does? The big one for me is Marvin Gaye - 'What's Going On?' This was a landmark album by any standard: ........but despite all of that, I just plain don't like it. No matter how hard I try (& God knows I've tried!) I can't grow to love it.

I feel the same about Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica'. I have tried to listen to this on several occasions, but simply cannot see (or hear) what the fuss is about. To me it just seems to by a lot of discordant noise, with no structure or message.
Yet it is often placed in those lists of the 'Best Top 10 LPs of All Time'. There is anecdotal evidence that Beefheart had just bought himself a new hat, and refused to remove it during the recording session. This meant he wasn't wearing headphone, so he couldn't hear himself during recording. Another explanation for the odd recording is due to th excessive influence by Zappa who (I believe) produced the album.
Either way, I believe the reason why Trout Mask Replica gained such plaudits was because it was by Beefheart and therefore must be good, regardless of the fact that I suspect few, if anyone understood it. Emperor’s New Clothes?

Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell
This seems so popular, but I don't know why. Multi-million selling it might be, but it sounds like a load of sub-par pseudo-heavy dreck to me.

It is a classic. 8/10 on the Mikeometer, while Revolver and With the Beatles gets 9 Yellow Submarine is a curate's egg with some tracks 10/10

I try every now and again
The sheer skill to play that is almost beyond belief, but the noise they make still doesn't get to me either

Fabulous cover
Embarrassing pompous drivel

Are you talking about Meatloaf now? If so, I agree!

100%
Meathead more apt
When I first saw the cover I knew it would be wonderful - what a surprise it is so boring
Bit like Ramases - Space Hymns I have the fold out cover set up as a large picture Don't have or want the album

Well I love it, great album. One for me is Richard Thompson, I love Fairport (early not now) and really like Teddy Thompson (son) and Linda, but I just cannot get on with anything Richard does. I know he's a supremely talented songwriter and superb musician, but I have a complete blind spot for his solo work - I think it's his voice, but I don't care much for his musical style either. And Adele, but it's her as a person I really don't like, she does have a great voice, but I can't get past the fact that I don't like her. (I'm not going to mention Lana Del Ray!)

Richard Thomson's voice annoys the hell out of me too.

If we're talking about voices (and I'm studiously ignoring the LdR reference), then little comes close to Rufus Wainwright for me. A more whiny, grating, tremulous and intensely annoying sound it would be hard to imagine. So thoroughly objectionable is he that I hold my single CD of his as an object lesson in how to waste the resources of an entire studio and crew on producing such an utter horror.

I haven't made up my mind on young Rufus. Agreed he does have a bit of a whine His dad mainly makes good albums with a few so so - coincidentally with R Thompson assisting on some, but not singing

then little comes close to Rufus Wainwright for me. You can't deny his talent as a songwriter and entertainer though Martin, but I totally get he has a Marmite voice - I think he's the business, but I am a bit of a fool

With a mum and dad like that he has to have had some sort of intro. With that family life he has a few things to air as well

I remember someone saying to me that it is one of the best-produced albums of all time. That may well be, but doesn't stop it being overly theatrical pomp-rock, and er, a bag o'shite ...

For me, Dylan is in the same category: I saw him live and thought his voice was simply terrible. However, he is (obviously) a great songwriter.
