Confess to getting that original Linn Naim system from Grahams Sounded better than the active Meridian system round the corner and there was nothing else in the ball park, I thought, led by the mags
Nicely brain washed

A lot of us made the same mistake of reading reviews in mags too get a decent system.

I don't feel it was a mistake given the times and lack of internet information etc. The magazines were useful up to a point just to see what was out there and I'd make my own mind up from dealer demos.

I suspect many of us did the same thing we read reviews from certain reviewers and when we found we agreed with the reviewer for a few items we started to trust that person . Then when we needed an item we used those reviews to identify the items we were looking at and then make our own choice . Sometimes it worked , sometimes it did not . Still find myself listening rather than reading measurements .

I devoured the magazines when I was younger and they certainly helped to create a shortlist. I then had to hear the component live, and that's where the problems began. No dealer could put together a system allowing me to properly judge whether said component would work for me.
I remember being exasperated once when I arrived at Audio-T to evaluate a preamp, having told them exactly what I had in my system - including big transmission line speakers. They had setup their demo system with Proac Tablette speakers. I asked them, with some annoyance, how I was going to evaluate with the bottom two octaves missing? They seemed perplexed. I pretty much gave up with dealer demos at that time and started organising loans so that I could evaluate in my own system.

Would the fact that so many on here have helped & pointed me in the right direction mean that they were effectively became a committee & that my system is a Camel designated by said committee.
It was recently discovered from fossil bones 3.5 million years old of a giant Camel found in Canada's high arctic, indicates that the camel foot (behave) was evolved to spread it's weight on snow not sand.

Similarly like you I have decided my system is not a horse, but a Zebra, it meets the requirements has 4 legs, what makes it unique is it has been around for a while and has stripes, each incarnation is unique in terms of stripes, a bit like my system.

I don't think we operate as one intelligence (!), but you are probably hearing a good amalgamation of our experiences boiled into generally sound advice
