Comparing how equipment sounds to how it measures Two different aspects, with overlap that can vary enormously (If you don't already know. A cow has 4 legs, a horse has 4 legs therefore a cow is a horse, and vice versa) Feel better now I've said that

Keep taking the tablets, Mike (but I agree with you).

There is a certain reassurance in having kit that both measures and sounds great.
The component that measured the best but sounded the worst in my system was easily the Topping Pre90. Fortunately it wasn't an expensive experiment as they were in demand at the time and it was easy to get my money back.

Once upon a time I only had the hifi mags. That was how I bought kit. Measurements predominated. If it measured well it was obviously good 'Obvious' in the way that word is now used 'obvious to me with my opinion' Then I went to the next level, listening to kit at dealers. Measurements rarely mentioned especially in the toe tapping, PRAT days The real world shock came when I heard MartinT 's system. So far ahead of my Linn Naim system it depressed me

A Dog has 4 legs too. I bet a lot of ASR members systems sound like a dog.

As Dave Cawley of Sound HiFi said to me many years ago:
If it measures good and it sounds good, it is good. If it measures good and it sounds bad, it is bad. If it measures bad and it sounds good, it is good. If it measures bad and it sounds bad, it is bad.

So far ahead of my Linn Naim system it depressed me You ditched that crock and now have a really good sounding system. Job done, cow≠horse!

Mike, a horse is also my dining table, which has the requisite number of legs.

Yes, but how does it sound? Confusingly, it meows, like a cat.

Perhaps a cat is a horse..... Does a Rocking Horse count, or a MK plastic Cow?

There is the other thing or three to consider
'The measurements' are based on a decision from, what 50 years ago ? What has been added to 'the measurements' ?
If it sounds great but measures not so good something else needs measuring. Might even be bleedin' obvious to a tech expert

If it measured well it was obviously good 'Obvious' in the way that word is now used 'obvious to me with my opinion' Then I went to the next level, listening to kit at dealers. When I was a youngster I paid no attention to measurements but I did look at the hifi magazines a lot and developed some kind of shortlist of kit that appealed to me. I found that The Music Room in Manchester had most of this kit to audition! Such fond memories of that shop ...

It was Audio T and The Cornflake Shop for me. At Graham's, which many people recommended, I got nothing but arrogance and closed minds.
