I heard about it on R4 this morning. A lot of crossover nonsense about amalgamating classical with pop. As you say, unnecessary and it's not as if the Proms are lacking in ticket sales.
In fact, I'll wager that the big classics sell out the fastest, so why fix what ain't broke?

The premise is a crossover of pop and classical?
I'm nearly lost for words ... Why on earth is that necessary or a good idea?

Frustrating much.
Huge queue on the Royal Albert Hall website due to punters trying to get tickets for Florence and the Machine.
This just does my head in.
It's meant to be a CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL!!

Indeed, Jules. This is what the BBC website's "Proms" page leads with... Reading a bit about Prom 69 though it would appear that it's being promoted as an at least semi-classical offering. Prom 69: Florence + The Machine – Symphony of Lungs
...The BRIT Award-winning Lungs immediately announced Florence as an artist of huge courage, theatricality and vocal abilities – earning her a place on BBC Radio 1’s prestigious ‘ Sound of ...’ list. For her Proms debut, she joins Jules Buckley and his Orchestra for a celebration of Lungs, and of the compelling poetry and music of this singular artist in whom the darkly gothic meets all that glistens. All I'll say is that she's got a Hell of a voice on her, and she's as "classical" as some of the things I've heard by Ēriks Ešenvalds, or the brilliant Eric Whitacre. Here's a taster of what to expect. No, I wouldn't class it as classical, but having heard some of the abominations that claim that title, I don't begrudge her having a stab. That said, we're never going to see a concert bill featuring "Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, Mahler's Rückert-Lieder, and Lungs, by Flo und die Maschine," are we?

A valiant effort Paul but I think "semi-classical" is a stretch! I've absolutely nothing against them, I just think it's misplaced and clogs up the booking system with sweaty little pop pickers who are more than catered for elsewhere. It was sold out within the hour and naturally the first concert to do so.

No I didn't, Jules. Too busy this summer and not particularly turned on by the offerings.

Last night was the most extraordinary vocal performances I have ever heard, and one of the best concerts full stop. More anon ...

But now, some impromptu thoughts on First Night after catching up on iPlayer...
The Handel played on modern instruments - yuk! Just so wrong, especially the large string contingent.
The Bruckner Psalm 150 - yes! The BBC Symphony Chorus really gets to grips with a full blooded and glorious performance.
Ah, and then the piece de la resistance, Isata Kanneh-Mason shines a light on the massively underrated Clara Schumann PC (composed at age 16) with a masterful and utterly incandescent performance that could not have been any more committed and enthralling. Delighted to see this so well received in the hall. She then doubles down with an encore of rich and sumptuous Gershwin, underlining her maturity as a concert pianist. I think there is much more to come from this young lady ...
End of ... Not sure I can be bothered with LVB 5!

Proms average ticket sales up from 93% to 96% this year with around a third first timers.
No doubt someone around the corner will say classical music is in crisis or worse and needs reinventing...

Well, I for one didn't think much of the programme this year.
Perhaps I'm no longer the target audience?
