I heard about it on R4 this morning. A lot of crossover nonsense about amalgamating classical with pop. As you say, unnecessary and it's not as if the Proms are lacking in ticket sales.
In fact, I'll wager that the big classics sell out the fastest, so why fix what ain't broke?
