Nils Lofgren - Acoustic Live
Thought I would share this album of Nils's as for me it has someof his best ever performances of his best songs, the energy, power, emotion and the sheer quality of the music. Which is superbly recorded and produced.
The Album
“Lofgren, no stranger to audiophiles, has standard recordings so good — the music, of course, warrants attention regardless of the sound quality — that ‘Keith Don’t Go’ has long been a show demo fave. This set from 1997, recorded when ‘unplugged’ was cool, is exactly what you’d want from a stellar guitarist with a distinctive voice, backed by piano and other guitars: an airy feel, a sense of space, all the requisite woodiness, the twang accounted for in a vivid manner that will make you wish you owned Quad ’57s.” — Sound Quality = 89% – Ken Kessler, HiFi News, August 2016
Guitarist and singer-songwriter Nils Lofgren in 1997 released a small treasure for longtime fans. Acoustic Livecaptures Lofgren alone in front of an appreciative audience, knocking out such favorites as “You,” “No Mercy” and “Keith Don’t Go,” plus six new songs. Even with the new songs, there are no real revelations, only a selection of little gems that will put a smile on your face as you listen.
This is a digital recording that is outstanding.

Nils was the first artist I ever saw live, supporting the Who at Wembley. His guitar playing is always good, however it is rare that I can enjoy his music apart from the wonderful Keith Don't Go Sorry just not my thing

Here's the Qobuz link: open.qobuz.com/track/16304049As I said, this is a stunner, an amazing unplugged recording that is full of vibrancy. Lofgren makes his acoustic guitar sound like much more than solo accompaniment on occasion. His voice can be marmite but it's fine with me. The recording is exceptional in imparting the energy of the performance. On your scoring, it's an easy 4/5 for me.

Tried Nils Lofgren a few times. Saw him live with Neil Young on tour, probably Transformer. Horrid.

I had a listen and I was not that taken with it on an initial pass, I actually do have several Nils Lofgren albums and like him a lot, but not so taken with the stripped back versions made. 3/5 from me.

Apologies; I still haven't managed to listen to this yet, but thought I'd wish Nils Lofgren a happy 72nd Birthday in the meantime.

And now I have listened to it. A rare-ish 5/ 5 from me. I played it via Chris's very helpful YouTube link, and even in that relatively lo-res format it was fairly obvious that the recording Gods had come together to make almost the perfect-sounding product. I'm a fan of Nils, and a lot of that is due to his work with Springsteen, although I was buying his music prior to that. " Little On Up" in fact, is an almost perfect Bruce Springsteen Unplugged pastiche, except it was recorded 5 years before Nils joined The E Street Band. I can hear Neil Young's "voice" in this album too, and there is also a lot of tasteful (and tasty) guitar playing. I need to mention one other track, and that's " All Out" which is a dead ringer for " Are You Still Wasting My Time" written by the Louvin Brothers, in places, especially Albert Lee's recording of it. About the only thing that could have made this album better for me would have been the inclusion of " Shine Silently" but as that was released 6 months after this album was recorded it might have proved a tad difficult.

I'm relieved. I was beginning to wonder about the negative views as I feel there can only be admiration for such a great performance and recording.
This is an iconic live recording, one of the best I know.

I really don't like this album . . . heard it many times over the years as it pops up on forums from time to time, so I revisit it occasionally but my opinion never changes. My view is it's an audiophile album, technically okay and well recorded and can 'sound' really good on a very good system but musically for me it has no soul - I see it as a good system test recording but not something to sit down and enjoy, unless you are just listening to your system. I know I'm probably in a minority but music has to have a lot more for me than just sounding superb, which to be fair this does, but it has never managed to move me.
I'll get my coat
