Our plumber uses a phone with add-on that shows infra-red so that we could see hot water flowing in our underfloor heating.
He's had it for some years and it's not Apple.

The chances are, you won't find a suitable "app" Mike, simply because your phone won't have the required sensor to make it work. As Sean says, F.L.I.R. ( Forward Looking InfraRed) is what you're describing, so you're looking at either a "dongle" of some description, or a dedicated camera. The dongle in your image looks to be the ONE PRO LT Micro-USB Thermal Imaging Camera, at just 329 quid. www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=FLIR+Thermal+Imaging+Camera&qid=1670255978&ref=sr_pg_1

Yes, that is about as cheap as you're going to get. You can hire them these days and the cheapest looks to be Jewson. That might be an option. www.jewson.co.uk/p/flir-i7-thermal-imaging-camera-JTH07251I have no experience of the smartphone modules, but the Testo units are pretty good, although they are about £2K - £3K + VAT.

I should add that I run a testing laboratory so my view of value for money here is somewhat skewed!

£2-300 for the add on is a lot more than I guessed Dead cheap Chinese ones from £40 odd on Ebay. How good one wonders

£200 - £600 for the add-ons. Stand-alone units start at about £500.

Those cheap units you've seen on eBay appear to be just sensors, and with a resolution of only 8 x 8 pixels. Not much use for what you want to be able to visualise.

Thanks everyone
Thought the demand would have made them much less than that
Makes the price I paid for a thermal survey seem an even bigger bargain £400 plus in 2009

Thanks Pete That might be all I need to show cold bits on the inside of the house and warm bits outside

This cold has pushed me further into buying one of these.
There are parts of the house that are too cold. I can feel the cold draughts in places
Might go as cheap as I can to find out how I could use it then likely trade up to a better model Looks like £100s will do the trick

Mike, being naturally cautious (as tight as a duck's arse) I would ask myself just how much use I was going to get out of the camera once the initial " fun" had worn off, and how long it would be sitting in a cupboard doing bugger-all aftaerward. I would look more carefully at hiring one (OK, you have to give it back, but you're going to get a far better quality tool) or, al;ternatively, what's goping to give me the best resale value, so I could recoup some or all of my putlay be reselling the camera. With the rental situation, you need to sit down and plan exactly what your tasks would be, them write them down, make a plan. That's also a good method for working out the longevity of your shiny new camera. Work out what you need done, and then employ somebody with the same technology to do the work for you. You can show him/her your FLIR images (which he/she will no doubt replicate) and ask for the requisite " after" shots on completion of the work. Just laying out an alternative for you, on a subject about which I know nothing, in the long-established tradition of forums everywhere.

A sound plan.
An alternative approach would be to use a non-contact thermometer in place of an imaging device. From your original post it seems you want to see if heat is 'leaking' out of the window frames etc. If it is then the area adjacent to them will be warmer than further away and that should be measurable in the current weather. I assume that there is a good chance that due to the pandemic you bough a non-contact thermometer (or can if not - they are pretty cheap) and so you may already have something that can answer the question to a greater extent. Yes, a thermal imaging picture is very nice and shows differences in heat emission in a clear way (and always looks good from an energy surveyers perspective), but you don't need a detailed thermal map to show you if you are leaking heat. A thermometer and a pencil and paper will tell you an awful lot.
