I used to use 56 lbs farm weights on top of some B&W floorstanders. Like these They were an almost perfect fit on the flat top of my then speakers. These.... They certainly sounded different from what I remember. I had them on the top for a number of years. My dealer came round to fit something on my fruitbox and poo pooed them saying the ferrous metal will affect the tweeter's magnets and the diffraction will be different from the changed baffle height. I thought it was just sour grapes as it was something I could do that didn't involve the transfer of money from my bank account to his. This was before I discovered the delights of diy. It must have had a positive effect for me at the time otherwise they wouldn't have stayed on top for years.

I tried this idea years ago and I ended up bolting sheets of 16mm steel to the bottom of the speakers rather than putting things on the top as that gave me far better results. My presumption was that it reduced the centre of gravity, which probably added to the effect.

Weights still in place
Started the playlist with 3 Bajafondo albums Which are wonderful Listening louder than normal. Seems like the volume control is just the detail control The grunt from the bass in this electro tango is fantastic
Aesthetics may have a part to play as the boss is close to incredulous Will let you know how that goes....

Have you tried weights on your listening chair Mike? I have visions of Mike and chair slowly vibrating around the room, facing backwards after a particularly long track. That's some image shift.

Seriously impressed with the sound quality improvements, working my way through the favourite album playlist.
Looking around for heavier, safe weights I can place on the speakers to try out
Anyone with horizontal speaker tops grab a couple of heavy weights and hear for yourself

They are leather-clad, so tend to mould themselves to what they are placed on. In the case of the TAD's with their bevelled surface, they do not fall off!

Much as I have with my cloth door stops Never fallen off or looked as if they moved ? Did you audition different weights ?

The Apollo XX Vibb Eaters are recommended for speakers or audio components weighing 40kg+ I also tried a pair of the Jumbo Vibb Eaters at 6kg each, but concluded that heavier was better and further compressed the springs in my Townshend Seismic Podiums, while still being within the prescribed weight range (TAD CR1 speaker + stands + Vibb Eaters) on a size 4 Seismic Podium.

There is of course the risk that they'll get caught in the bass traps, Steve!

Thanks Steve I'll go for the heaviest I can, subject to the Townshend's being able to cope.

I must try this at the weekend. My speakers are flat on top, so I should be able to find something suitable.

I'm looking for an item like the Vibbeaters Not leather and thinking home made would be the first if not final step This also allows me to alter the weight to check the stands are still floating free
Need a grippy material and heavy weight inside.
The wrist weights I have are in the right area. Black and fairly grippy. Heavier than 1kg required

Googling weights on loudspeakers shows I was nowhere near the first ! The late Alastair Robertson-Aikman of SME fame, attached heavy brass panels to his various Quad speaker arrays in his enormous purpose built subterranean listening lair & he knew what he was doing, indeed he was not the first to improve his sound by increasing mass even with speakers that were truly heavy. 1950's & 1960's particularly in the USA concrete was used to weight existing speaker cabinets or built from concrete.

Curved, slippery top to the TAD E1 speakers makes life more difficult for me

Curved tops on my Ushers, too. However, since they have lower compartments filled with lead shot, it's not really necessary to further weight them.
