As with other aspects of audio (analogue versus digital, valves versus transistors), there are many ways to skin a cat. It should be possible to make a great amp using class A, Class AB or Class D topology. We will each have our preference: mine is for Class AB as that is what I'm using and I haven't heard better when trying other designs. For others, their preference will be different. Zackly

It was an interesting enough video but told me what I already know - Class D amps can measure very well. I don't know if anyone here would buy an amp just based on measurements.
Whilst I have said my personal preference is for AB I am happy enough to audition a Class D amp where possible. Why not? They are rapidly improving. Smaller form, more efficient are good qualities to have but I won't choose them at the expense of ultimate sound quality.

I don't know if anyone here would buy an amp just based on measurements. Never. Remember the Quad 405 measured 'perfectly'.

So has anyone actually heard any of the latest Purifi Class D modules?

l purchased Nord 1ET400A Monoblocks, with sonic op-amps, and love them. They replaced my Temple Audio Monoblocks, and in my view, have plenty of power, low noise floor, and simply more refined compared to the Temple's.
l was at the same crossroads myself, and went the Nord Acoustic direction, as l couldn't find a bad review, lots of happy users, you can upgrade various bits if you feel the need, and there UK based, there are loads of hypex based amps on the market these days, l went the Nord direction,as l value customer service. Just thought I would share my biased views.

Hi Damien, that's very interesting and thanks for sharing ...
It has been a while since I last heard the Temple monos but I know they are very capable amps, so it must be very pleasing to get a good step up from them.
Did you manage to get some kind of demo or did you just know that they would be right for you?

Having evaluated the KJF Audio SA-01 Hypex-based amp, my observation is that Hypex have a very good top-to-bottom overall performance. They represent a good midrange performance level for decently low prices. My one reservation is that they lack the last word in authority compared with a good Class AB amp. To be fair, this was comparing a sub £1000 Hypex based amp with the £5.5k Class AB Belles amp. Do have a look at KJF's offerings. kjfaudio.com/stereo-and-mono-ncore-amplifiers/

TBH I read a few reviews, l think there's is some on the Hi Fi Wigwam forum, got lucky on a used pair on ebay. Then purchased the upgraded bit and fitted myself. l believe they are based in Cheltenham, so perhaps you could travel and have a demo, they have quite a few models

KJF seem to offer very good value - you can get a pair of Hypex 500W monos for £1200. I think if I was going to try Class D I would be more tempted by the latest Purifi modules in the Nord amps. Cheltenham is a bit of a trek but a nice area for a weekend break!

Yes, depends on where you're based. But at least you get a chance to listen, and they have spares on hand, l prefer service over the cheapest, and knowing that if things go wrong, they offer the service as well.

Back in the world of Class AB, does anyone have any experience with Bryston or ATC power amps?

Dry & extra dry, bags of power, detail and slam music making NO, posh PA's a really good suggestion

You can build your own Hypex units with a purfi module if you wish about £1K
I still find them solid 2D, clean, powerful and articulate, detailed and not harsh or forward. For myself they cannot express depth, textural rendering, layering, palpability with trailing note decay and natural timbre. Yet to find one that has real deep, chewy tight and atriculate bass repsonse.
However for the outlay they are hard to beat if you like this style of presentation. The bigger brothers are used in the Kii's

Anyone come across Moon amps by Simaudio? They tick a lot of boxes on paper for me but never heard any ... A friend of mine changed amps last year, he auditioned the MOON 600I V2 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER (I think this is the make you are referring to), he found it pretty good in the end purchase pre-used Vitus R101, he also auditioned a Krell 300i, all are integrated stereo amps. I heard both the Vitus and Krell at is home driving a pair of Tannoy Kensington KR's, the Vitus pipped the Krell but not by much, possibly more neutral and seemed to have a bit more umph, Dave said that the Moon was very similar to the Krell maybe a little more open sound. Anyway at this level of cost they are all pretty good. I preferred the Vitus.

Thanks Adrian!
My budget wouldn't stretch to the Krell or Vitus but the lower end of Moon's offerings look worth consideration, especially as I don't want to pay for those models with DACs and streaming etc

Jules, isn't the integrated Belles amp within range? You really ought to try it.
