I've always wished I had taken up an instrument. Guitar, probably. Too late now.

I've always wished I had taken up an instrument. Guitar, probably. Too late now. Ditto. Had an acoustic for my 21st, played around with it, got the CSN music book, but I wanted to be Hendrix and electric. Shame I didn't work out acoustic could be good too

I play some el-guitar at home, just for fun and relax...Started as 13 years old, played for 6 years with teacher, then other interested things turned up...But it is good to have several guitars for different moods. You just play different with different guitars,,,Many parameters here too...Then they become like old friends,,,Sometimes I play just for 10 minutes a day, sometimes it goes weeks before playing...Very seldom I plug it into my amp, it is fun anyway, but to an amp, you have even more parameters to play around with....I can start with some simple riff, like smoke on the water, then experemt with it and explore....it always become different things,,,but never like Deep Purple....You should try an instrument, good for your soul, promise..!!

Thanks Lasse I can see that now you mention it I'll dig out my ancient acoustic and have a strum or 2

I can play guitar a bit but not up to the standards I wanted Yes. I wanted to be Hendrix in a few minutes. What I didn't get was the constant drilling to get you there, sheer talent or both !

I totally agree with you, John. That is very frustrating but in between, I can still enjoy just fooling around with my guitars...

Talent is useful but practice helps. So why, given my new years resolution was to find time to play guitar, haven't I picked one up in over 2 months?

It's because you made it a resolution, that killed it immediately. To master an instrument you need practice and dedication, I'm afraid life gets in the way of the latter.
Can't remember when I last picked up my sax.............
Cheers, Alan

I had the dedication but not the talent of my hereos I wanted to be a cross between Django and Hendrix lol. With a bit of Al DiMeola thrown in for good measure!

Its a funny old mix. My missus is clearly gifted - her voice is a bit special. I have been "tone deaf" ( a nonsense term - most "tone deaf" people sing badly exactly because they can hear how badly they sing). She insists every one can learn to sing, (I think even she is finding my son a bit of a challenge) and I can now sing with confidence in tune when I get the key right. She taught me that, and I spent 40+ years believing it was unteachable. Moreover, her voice may be special, but she spent 12 years training it, probably singing at least 40 hours a week, before going to Trinity to spend 3 years training it full time under John Wakefield. I have had more than a few lessons from Joe Gibson (guitarist friend in Dave Migdens band) , who teaches guitar for a living. He can pick a guitar up, and play anything on a record, within minutes, even when the guitar part is buried deep in the mix. A difficult 5 minute record takes him about an hour. I suspect Joe too has a talent - but he reckons he plays guitar (or at least has one in his hands) 5 hours a day every day, and has since he was 12. You're going to get better like that! My step-son Harry, is also naturally musical, and plays drums, ukelele and now - self-taught, piano. But again, he spends probably 3 hours a day playing his next fairly simple pop piece. It makes a difference. My guitar - my problem is too many distractions, including this bloody forum. I have a caravan to prep, paddocks to mow, a Pip2 to get running, Lowthers to play with, ESL's to pick up (or not), and a backlog of work. That said , I have just fumbled my way through remembering the verse for "Over the Rainbow" and got sore fingers. I'll keep it up!

'Course the other thing ...... My darling other half has this unknowing competence thing that can be a real pain
She starts doing things from scratch and immediately is at expert level, all the while self deprecating "I know nothing about it"
I bet she could pick up an instrument and master it too quickly
Some people have such talent out of the box - what impresses me is the ones that then push it even further and practice so they soar out of reach of us normal punters

When I was practising 5 to 8 hours a day I could certainly hear my playing getting better, the other thing was all the melodies that were coming in my head, but playing guitar is frustrating as still was not able to apply that the way I wanted too

The thing is to get that immediate transfer
These horribly clever people that can play just by hearing once. You can only be born with that.
Took me many years to realise that practice really does work in so many ways and on so many levels

I would like to be able to sing. I try(at work, where it's noisy and no one bothers) but lack consistency. Keep saying I will take lessons but I think I'd be too embarrassed!

Try mumbling a bit with good music on the hifi, louder than you, then allow your voice to get louder each session.
I now seem to be mumbling/singing quite loud enough for people to hear and I don't care !

I don't think its ever too late to start. Enjoyment can be got from operating at even a simple level. My playing got sidetracked by getting more interested in making guitars than playing them but I still give the strings a bash from time to time.
Practice doesn't just train the mind, it trains the fingers too. I know exactly what I want to do but half the time the fingers seem to want to do something else.
As far as singing is concerned, whilst untrained, I know my voice is wonderful. Every time I start singing in the bath or the shower I just know there is a Pav... skip that, Paul Robeson trying to get out. Ronnie reckons he should stay locked up but what does she know?

I learnt violin / viola / trumpet and French Horn at various stages of my youth. I do wish I had learnt the piano though. My son is now on his Grade 3 and we have a nice Yamaha piano for him that it would be great to be able to play ... If my mum lived nearer I would ask her to teach me for sure!

My whole family were put through piano lessons as kids. I do mean put through!! The family badges of honour were plastered all over the lounge walls. My mum was horrified when I objected to going through the exam process. I told her I liked the lessons but played for pleasure and had no intention of sitting in any exam. I had enough of that stuff in the rest of the education system. Mind you, I also got suspended from school for missing certain lessons as I preferred to spend the time in the art room. So I studied at home and passed all their damned exams just to annoy them. What a little rebel I must have been
