I have recently started playing clarinet again after a 13yr hiatus. Apart from forgetting most of my scales and upper register notes it's like coming back to something very natural and familiar. I was pleasantly surprised that I can still play the thing and muscle memory is a great thing too.

I don't think its ever too late to start. Enjoyment can be got from operating at even a simple level. My playing got sidetracked by getting more interested in making guitars than playing them but I still give the strings a bash from time to time. Practice doesn't just train the mind, it trains the fingers too. I know exactly what I want to do but half the time the fingers seem to want to do something else. As far as singing is concerned, whilst untrained, I know my voice is wonderful. Every time I start singing in the bath or the shower I just know there is a Pav... skip that, Paul Robeson trying to get out. Ronnie reckons he should stay locked up but what does she know?

If anyone ever gets the chance to visit Kinloch Castle on Rum,in the grand entrance hall is a beautiful vintage Steinway which is kept tuned and you are welcome to play if you can. It's also home to a very rare orchestrion which (while not perfectly tuned) is a sound and spectacle to behold indeed.
Highly,highly recommended.

Nice! Where does the epi335 sit in the range in relation to the other 335-alike semis?

Nice! Where does the epi335 sit in the range in relation to the other 335-alike semis? To be honest, I've only ever played a few cheap 'n 'cheerful semis before the Epiphone, but it (obviously, hopefully) leaves them for dead. I've no idea how it stacks up against a pukka Gibson but bearing in mind there's roughly a two and a half grand price difference I'm not even sure it should be compared. From what I've read it's a case of "next best thing for the price" and I'm really happy with the sound and playability, and the looks of course. What finally twisted my arm on this one was finding a shop selling this model, the ES-335 Pro Ltd. Edition for the same price as a bog standard ES-335 Dot, so I got uprated pickups with coil splitting, a bound fingerboard, and block inlays a-la Gibson rather than dots amongst other little bits and pieces. I should probably also say that this, and the Vintage Tele copy, are the only two I've paid full price (or at least 'shop price') for. The others were bargains on eBay.

My final pair of purchases. I am now having whatever is the guitar buying equivalent of the "snip" in case I'm tempted again. The first is a French model and is an amplified classical (nylon strung) guitar and was an eBay bargain - a Lag Tramontane TN66ACE The final addition to the collection is a Paul Reed Smith SA Angelus Custom, and I actually paid full price for this one, that's how much I wanted it. It's even got my initials on the truss rod cover It's a standard steel strung acoustic, but it's a thing of beauty.

Remember how I said that PRS guitar was the "final" addition? I lied. A serious bargain on eBay means I'm skint again I've been looking for one of these that wasn't going to break the bank for ages now... Gordon Giltrap Signature

Saw him play one live a couple of years ago in Andover. He held the audience all on his own no trouble. A really good night out, that was.

I met him donkey's years ago when he played at a folk club I used to help run. One of the guys at the club tried to embarrass me by telling him I'd played one of his songs the week previous. I'm happy to say Gordon was a thoroughly nice bloke though and chatted for ages, including asking me what key that song of his was in. If I recall correctly he was just about to release his "Visionary" album and we were treated to some solo acoustic versions of some of the tracks from it. Needless to say I bought it as soon as it was released.

I rarely pick up the 6 or 12 string these days - I mean months go by. Time was I played every day for hours... Now I'm lucky to remember some tunes all the way through and end up playing the annoyingly obvious. I still love the sound of it t though and it is live music:) I'll end up murdering Stairway to heaven, Wish you were here and Hey Joe and the like:)

I've finally bought myself a Line6 Variax 600 and the associated "workbench" software too. It's a guitar I've wanted to try out for ages and which has internal piezo pickups and modelling firmware that reproduces the sounds of, well, this lot... ...which will hopefully arrive this weekend-ish. The additional software and interface allows you to connect said guitar to a computer and "model" an infinite number of guitars by selecting the body type, pickup(s), positioning of the pickup(s) etc. not to mention set up special tunings ( e.g. for slide guitar). For some reason the missus seems to think I can now sell all of my other guitars. Perhaps I sold the idea of this one to her a bit too well. I both love and hate eBay, in equal measure.
