Well attempted to get my PC's physically out of the PC last night. Sadly l managed this,but for whatever reason, SATA cables don't seem to like extension connectors,the end result, even through the leads are sheilded, was a distorted audio signal, so l had to put it back in the PC, and have improved shielding around the SSD drive.
Still enjoying the R26, which l would class as a polite DAC,that brings musical elements and details that many other Chinese DACs can't muster, could it be better, l would say, a bit more upper mids and highs,more Prat, to quote Tony.
Don't get me wrong, l will live with the minor blemishes, and the other quality's the R26 bring far outways any minor tonal views.

TBH l find the ESS chips have too much bite, hence why l lived with the AKM4499 so long.
There certain music qualities that the R26 has means l will be sticking with it.
As it stands, l running it via USB input, with my AD clock, it sounds great.
However using the Audio GD with the AD clock brings things up another notch, and l had some real moments, so looking forward to having that back from repair.
Another factor simply could be l am missing the l2s sound, l have got accustomed to,so l still have plenty of miles to run yet,at ths stage, you'll have fight me to give up on the R26.

Damien, you need to listen to John's salient and timely voice of reason.
In fact the first thing to do is to buy an X26 this evening with Express Delivery. It's a terrible time to sell gear as you know but I will do you a favour with the R26, with a modest imbursement (against my better judgement), and then collect in due course.

I think you might be missing i2s l think your right, l could missing the DDC l2s presentation 🤔 Still l'm sat here, loving Leee John's voice(lmagination) lf was to a total U Turn,l'd asked Tony's advice and save,save save. I would consider a return to a SMSL VMV D2, with is a better spec version of my M400, but l really can't see this happening. |

From everything I have read about the R26 it would seem its natural partner would be AES, whilst I2S would be X26's. Still, certainly an experiment to be had ...

WIth the audio gd I did not hear much difference between the 2 formats With the U18 differences are bigger l can believe that, but truth is,l only used the U18 on l2s on my SMSL,and did the same with GD, it all changed with the R26, so will have to be patient. l am also considering a Matrix Audio X-SPDIF 2,and ditch my Matrix Audio Element H card, it will allow for a simpler low powered PC, plus it has I2s output,plus other outputs, so plenty to play with. l'll get back to listening 🎶 Vigilante by Magnum. |

What l can say, when l had it running for a brief period via Coax GD to R26 it sounded incredible |

lt started playing up outputting Coax to the R26, especially if you changed the sample frequency, lt would mean repowering the GD,but the fault just got worse, it was the same via AES.
Anyway, had to do some cross checking, make sure it wasn't the R26, then l managed to get the same issue using the SMSL M400, so l narrowed it down. lt's probably a small part failed on a board, Tony should sort it out.

Just quick note, that perhaps l have undersold the R26.
l have had a great two days of playing albums, probably been about 12 now, and l can honestly say that the R26 qualities have showed though in spades.
l lost four hours this morning,zero fatigue, maximum joy.
I guess my earlier posts my have come across as a negative, this wasn't really my intention, and really is testament to R26,as l know it's capable of more, by adding a DDC, or I2s.

More baby steps, be prepping by new low powered PC.
Managed to pick up a Gigabyte brix, it uses a Intel N4000 cpu, has a,TDP of 6 watts, and from what l can see, only draws just over 2 watts on replay.
l've updated the ram from 4gb to 8gb.
Disconnected the WiFi and BT from board.
Just waiting my Fidilizer Pro paid version to be emailed.But so far, so good.
Should be good to in few days, and if l am happy, l purchase a Zero Zone psu.

Waiting on Tony, but l told him to pick it up in between Jobs,so no rush.
TBH lt's not like l haven't been enjoying my current set up, the AD clock with the R26 sounds superb.

I used to have a Gigabyte BRIX. Lovely little PC, lasted me until I needed to upgrade to Windows 11.
