There was a time when I would have laughed out loud at a Celeron processor in anything usable. However, for low noise I see exactly where you're coming from.

Damien, That's good start I always used gigebyte base boards before we had own produced. Better inductors + some caps changes and some switch buck/boost reg quietning will help out there Looking forward to see how you get on with this one Well could be calling on your services again Tony, Just waiting on them to be produced. This board actually supports the M2.1 memory, and has a spare pcie port. The ASRock MB don't mention if they support memory in Pcie slots, so a bit of a risk. Having run some test on a really slow N3710 Laptop, using Jriver in Audio mode, playing 24/192 wav,it should be a breeze fir this board.

Myself included Tony, hence why l been running a i7 8700 for a couple of years, but these Celeron are catching up, while drawing little power, anyway you'll have to put up with my J3050B build first, until l get my hands on a N5150 board. Of course its not just the cpu, memory and Ram, and overall bandwidth, it certainly looks like a bright future. Damien

Been doing some more research, in regards to onboard M2 PCIE memory, interestly some of users seem to complain they suffer from noise, being placed directly on the motherboard.
l am thinking of moving the OS SSD completely out of the PC,and place it into its own sheilded box,one less item to be effected by noise.

Never had any issues with noise but I used tradition pcie slots and a bespoke DC filtartion device I built in to the other two slots along with a dedicated DC filter on the rail

l see...interesting Tony. Personally l haven't tried them yet,but just echoing some users reviews of them. It's all good fun.

Just discovered, you can purchase 100cm M2 to PCIE extension cables, meaning you can the card outside the PC

Lot of data going down those M.2 cables, keep them as short as possible, and shielded.

Yes ...Totally agree Martin.
The question are all memory modules the same? Apart from speed. Does one sound better than the other?
Naturally I won't be going the JCAT route,l don't have spare grand £££.

IMHO if you can avoid sata cables, not always possible I understand but the key is signal integrity here and ULTRA low noise

SATA is serial while M.2 is some kind of parallel fast bus. Could be more RFI coming from it because of all those signals.

What M2 memory do you recommend l should look towards? The best M.2 SSD is Samsung 980 Pro, but it depends on whether you're looking for high performance.

Apologies M2, ( mixed up my form factors) sorry I use those only for the OS & any propriatory playback software. Not for main file storage I use Optane drives via PCIE. As Martin mentions The 980 pro is the faster read / read write in ths form factor currently. Forgot you were using a smaller form factor MB doh!

Thanks both of you, it's OS for replay, l am looking at. l still use a 8tb conventionable hard drive via USB 3, for replay and storage of physical files, so baby steps first.

Well no progress on the new PC, actually waiting on leads to arrive,so l can move things around!
Did a interesting test with my i7 8700 cpu PC. The motherboard runs just the cpu, ram,a ethernet port, and one USB sockets, one for BT keyboard, lastly hdmi to monitor.
Surprisingly, on first boot,it draws just 24watts, once booted up, playing a 24/192 Wav file, it draws just 18 watts.
This means l won't need a monster PSU, l am expecting the J3060B-ITX to draw less.
Looks like l am having a sale, letting go of my Gustard U18 and SMSL M400 DAC, to raise funds for a Gustard R26...l hope l like it.

Well l am finally back, having gone missing in action due to a really bad two week run of cold and flu. Apart from felling awful, and actually depressed, l feel better. Of course it didn't stop me playing, so l finally got around to fitting my ASROCK J3060b-itx motherboard, what a nightmare, l couldn't get beyond Bios screen, l actually managed to Flash the bios, but l could not get the Motherboard to read the SSD drives, although it would see a USB stick, so l couldn't move any further forward. l had to abandon it, and refit the Asus board. l think the problem, lies the fact it was from the Win 7 era, before SSD where common place, your expected to load the drivers using a DVD drive, something l have long abandoned. The Win 10 compatability was added later. So its something l will have to revist, or don't be so tight, and purchase a recent itx board.
So the R26 has arrived, and l am about 20 hours in of use, and loving it, as a DAC it really is special, not a million miles from my SMSL M400 in tone balance, but does everything just better, you only need to read the R26 thread for other forum members views to confirm this.
Lastly, the PC experiments have been worthwhile, now moved the PC further away from the audio gear, so it's not in the rack. And tonight, l cloned and swapped out my Kingston V300 SSD OS drive for a Samsung 860Pro SSD, and just like using the drive for storage, the sound has improved, soundstage, imaging speed, a good result indeed.
