Indeed, at least the tournament finished on a more dignified note than when it started!

That looked a good final from the highlights.

Indeed, at least the tournament finished on a more dignified note than when it started! Yes, no sign of Craig Tiley, head of Tennis Aus!

Very good men's final. Went down to the wire. Seemed like Medvedev might run away with it after the first two sets But Nadal raised his game just enough, and Medvedev couldn't carry on serving as well. Long match, came down to a few crucial points, as is usual. Nadal won in 5, pretty gruelling sets! He last won Aus open in 2009! He's now a double career slam title winner. Having won all 4 slams twice in his career so far. Of course he's won the French open 13 times!
He is the first to 21 slams.
Nadal 21 Djok 20 Fed 20
Thoughts now turn to the French open in May. Nadal's usual stomping ground, except for last year. Will COVID vaccination politics play in again? Can Fed come back to Wimbledon? Let alone win it!
The ATP and WTA tour grinds on.
Next week the Tata open ATP 250. Where the lower ranked players can exhibit.
There are 2000 points for winning a GrandSlam!

An illuminating post-match interview from Medvedev. Not your standard fare.

Some great tennis from The Netherlands last week. This week the girls are in Dubai and the boys are in Rio plugging away on the clay. Then there's this. The news you all want to hear. Novax Djokovax🙂 www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-60354068The internet was quick.. He's calculating on the COVID problem ramping down in time so he can play and no one cares. Let's face it, so far he's held a supersreading tournament and pre Aus was either out and about infected, or cheated and lied / tried exemptions with Aus and ballsed it up with Insta of all things. His dad Srjdan - has opened his mouth again and put both good feet in it! Saying "The French will bend to our will and allow Novax to play".. hmm not so sure about that. His dad is just full on other planet delusional all the time. Love a bit of Novak

I don't have an objection to him not taking the jab. However, I do have an objection to how careless he has been around others

'He' is in Dubai practising for the upcoming ATP masters 1000 tournament. It was always going to be somewhere like Dubai, wasn't it? China would have been a last resort. Will they buy him, or just hire him do you think? Perhaps they'll just buy the ATP, or maybe they'll get a BOGOF deal and they'll get the ITF thrown in along with it. Would you believe me if I told you that some people consider me to be a bit of a cynic? Ridiculous, I know.

Lovely Alcaraz moment when he invited the 2 ball kids under the sun / rain shade, to escape the pouring Rio rain. He spoke to them, had a laugh with them as the DJ played singing in the rain!
The human side of tennis.
Alcaraz is the next really hot player from Spain. He's very young and has an amazing game.
Nice to see amid all the tosstesterone the top players have esp Djok / Nadal but even Fed has had his moments in the past.

Carlos Alcaraz went on to win the ATP500 tournament in Rio. Very challenging conditions, rain delayed. Playing 2 matches a day before the finals. The 18 year olds head stayed clear and he became the youngest ever player to win a ATP500!
I've been following him since he first popped up on tour. Definitely one to watch.
His biceps are bigger than Rafa's too!

Next tournament Acapulco 😱
Super slow treacle court. Nadal will like it..
First day kicked off at 6pm. They played 3 x 3 set matches. First one broke the time record for a 3 set match. 2nd one broke that record.. The 3rd match, Brooksby v Zverev was still on live while I had my mid morning coffee. That was 4.45 am local time! Crazy. Official the latest end to any match, ATP / ITF (Grandslam).

Just looked up Alcarez. Interesting - ranked 20 at age 18. One to watch.

Zverev's been a naughty boy. All that anger, in a doubles match too. Banned from the tournament and probably further ramifications. You just can't physically and verbally lash out a an official like this! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/tennis/60497346

Watched the Vesely def Djok in straight sets, match.
Vesely came through qualifying btw, so had his eye in. He had huge potential a few years ago, but got injured, lost his way rather. He played very well. Aggressive fast court tennis. Even the hugely pro Djok crowd (what's that about Dubai?) Couldn't help him. Djok didn't play that badly. Too many unforced errors overall, but Vesely didn't roll over under pressure, as many do.
Russian Danill Medvedev becomes world no 1. Breaks an 18year top 4 dominance! He's the tallest ever no 1, at 6'6".
Djok won't be playing the US swing, big tournaments Indian Wells, Miami etc - Novax, so can't get in.

As well as fined a bit more, bad boy Zverev has an 8 week suspended ban, bound over for a year.
8 weeks is too short imo. Should have been 1 year / 1 year.
Indian Wells ATP masters 1000 to get excited about starting Thursday.
The ladies start tomorrow.
128 enter, 1 leaves truly happy..🙂
All matches on Amazon Prime!👍 6pm UK time.
Russians play but under no flag.

Djok not playing at Indian Wells. Arguably the largest of tournaments bar the grandslams.
He would not have got in to the country - Novax!
A couple of other American players who are not vaxed are playing. Already in the country 🙂 Sandgren is one.
I'm not sure if Novaxed Americans can travel freely in and out?
Djok can't play at the next big one in Miami either, unless the rules change before then. Leaves him sorely lacking in match and big tournament play before the European season starts in April. Guess he can plug away on the clay practise courts all he likes until then though.
His long standing coach Marian Vajda is no longer on the team, splitting up after 15 years and 20 Grand Slam titles.
Speculation around the tensions coming to a head regarding the ongoing situation...
Still, 15 years is a long time!
