As this is my thread, I have requested it be locked. I was interested in opinions about guns and nine years olds but find politicking tedious in the extreme and of no interest whatsoever. Grow up and dont read it . Threads are organic entities of the forum , with the possible exception of sales threads or personal blogs they do not belong to the o/p .

Surely 'guns and nine year olds' is a political topic in itself, unless you simply wanted people to say that it's a bad idea to put automatic weapons in the hands of children, which is a truism from which few would dissent.

I have a degree in economics from a russell group university back when it was very hard for working class boys from Oldham to get to polytechnic never mind a proper uni By the way i am far more impressed by what people write as opposed to what they have accumulated and a degree in economics is normally a barrier to talking about it Are you positing yourself as an exception to this general rule?

Nope . by no means an exception , I had two events of remarkable fortuity . 1] Having been a single parent family for 7 years at the 16 my mum married her boss and this negated the need for me to find paid employment. 2] After being told by Brian Clough [ amongst others] that i wasn't good enough to be a pro-footballer , I met a marxist sociology lecturer with an LP12 .

That's a very insulting post. Would you walk up to people having a conversation and tell them to shut up because it doesn't interest you? Plenty of stuff that is written on forums doesn't interest me, so I skip over it. Maybe you could do the same? As DQ has said, an O/P doesn't own a thread, they merely kick things off. The thread should only be locked if it breaks the rules. Maybe the thread isn't within the rules because it includes discussion of politics, but it started that way and has been good natured so far and I was enjoying it. Who appointed you thread as thread police I wonder? I can't see administrator under your user name but maybe you are the secret thread police.....

My main objection is that this is about politics. This is a banned subject. The thread is not about politics.
If you want to discuss politics please feel free to discuss it to your heart's content.
As rudeness was becoming the norm on this thread, I thought I'd join in.

I see , all Marxists economics are the exception as they understand humans and historical materialism Fair enough. I gave up on economics after A level, figuring that was enough boredom to last me for the rest of my life. It wasn't helped by the fact that my economics teacher had a terrible stammer, so he was forever talking about 'ssssssuppppply and dddddemmmmandddd' in sentences that lasted ten minutes at a time. Curiously enough, he had, in his time, played rugby for the British Lions. .

Guys, please get back to the o/p about the US shooting incident or else this thread will be locked. You have severally made the point for me, which is that discussions on politics always end up like this. It's why we disallowed it in our rules.
Thank you.

So we must stop a conversation between two economists that the participants were enjoying about economic theory and get back to talking about gun control in the US Your wish is my command. I support more gun control in the US. Everyone on the forum feels the same way. End of thread.

Short, sweet and to the point. Next! Is a discussion about economics necessarily a political discussion? And/or can any discussion about the need for more restrictive legislation on gun ownership in the USA be anything other than political?

Actually Martin this debate is quite fascinating and to be blunt, it is almost impossible to discuss national economics without referring to politics.

I remember this story from years ago and have always thought this must have traumatized that girl for life. There were 3 adults present, including the one that died and all too stupid to save her from their stupidity.
The other story that has haunted me to be honest since I heard about it years ago was the Cheshire murders in Cheshire Connecticut. I wonder if anyone here knows of it, Maybe Its better not to know, but it just involves a home invasion on a normal Wednesday morning as a family was getting ready for work and school and how badly it ended. I've never been able to shake this one.
