It is difficult for a nation to garner respect throughout the world, suing for peace in troubled, far-off lands when your own citizens are armed to the teeth and gunning each other down with wild abandon.

I think a little bit of self moderation is required Dave! "Gunning each other down with wild abandon" is a rediculous statement to make, and far from reality. There is the occasional nutter who flips, but there's nothing you can do to stop them. It was only last year someone in Cardiff was mown down by a headcase driving a van - she died pushing her kids out of harm's way. Does this mean that we should stop our population from driving motor vehicles? No! |

There is a fundamental difference between cars and guns and whilst prefab sprout were correct , some things hurt more much more than cars and girls.They didn't mean guns .
Guns have no purpose except to fire bullets . The misery they cause is pursuant of thier purpose . Cars cause limited collateral misery which does not outweigh their purpose .Guns are designed to and must necessarily cause misery if they are used .That's why they should be banned .

Why self-moderation Chris? Guns have no other purpose than to maim or kill, cars (or vans) get you (or goods) from A to B on the other hand. As for the twonk you mention, had he lived in the US there may well have been many more casualties as he would have had easy access to firearms.

Guns do have legitimate purposes and if properly controlled there is no reason why people shouldn't pursue those purposes in a civilised society. Proper control is rarely excercised though, even in some countries with strict measures in place.
What went on in the case of the OP was unforgivable and both the club and the child's father, who I understand was present (filming the child shooting her instructor) should both be prosecuted.

Firstly , I would question what legitimate purpose .
Secondly, if for one minute i concede the issue of legitimate purpose [ which i am not inclined to do ] i would argue that such a purpose could be carried out without gun ownership .

One of the film crew from "Cops" just got shot dead by da cops in Omaha who were engaged in a gunfight with a bloke with a pellet gun. Brilliant.

Dave , it isnt , shooting is an olympic sport as well as a recrational activity for some . Additionally , guns control animals . Furthermore There are dart guns , glue guns , tranquiliser guns, staple guns , nails guns etc .  |
