For me, opera is so obviously a part of classical music that I am quite baffled when it's listed separately.
Not that I like opera (a very few exceptions to that) but then there are many genres and instances of classical music that I don't like or am not keen on. Many folks don't appreciate the huge range and diversity of music that falls under the heading of "classical".

Spotify today has come up with one of its lists of suggested albums.
This one is a "Starter Kit for Classical: Minimalism".
The usual and expected Glass, Reich, Arvo Part.... and also Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells!
Minimalist - absolutely (although I hadn't thought of it in that way before)
Classical -? Hmmm... Why not? It's probably as classical as many works that are considered as modern classical pieces.

Out of interest, and slightly off-topic, do you check out the NAXOS playlists they email out, Jerry? I've discovered some quite interesting ones.

I have always filed Pluhar under classical. Ancient instruments, folk-based songs. Wonderful.
I don't really care what genre she is given.

All mine are filed together regardless
Filing by individual genre must be one of the most confusing things going
Every know and again I discover a new genre, may well have jut been invented

I wouldn't call Christina Pluhar's efforts classical music, I'd call it bloody irritating music.

When I ran JRiver I was really anal about my cataloguing and cross-referencing in "Classical". I had seperate fields for trios, quartets, quintets, etc. all of which could be coss-referenced by "Piano" , "Violin" , "Saxophone," and so on. All of them were also listed by composer (obviously) and performers, plus conductors when we got down to Symphonies, concertos, etc.

True, but if I had to, I would suggest 'neo-baroque folk fusion'. Or even 'contemporary classical' putting a fresh spin on 16th and 17th century musical traditions.

[And] if ‘ classical’ is good enough for Bernstein, it’s good enough for us. Who am I to argue with that?

Looking at the film music thing from different perspectives, classical recording review publications like Gramophone, ClassicFM magazine, Fanfare all include film music reviews - so they obviously regard them as part of the classical genre. Film music also gets played regularly on classical radio stations like BBC Radio 3 and ClassicFM. Maybe there's, classical music based on or by the great composers or there's orchestral music made for a specific project with a more modern take. I don't really know just my two-penneth.

I can understand why film scores are played on classical music radio stations but that doesn't automatically make them classical music 'per se' for me - not that it really matters!

A lot of film music is described as "in the classical style," so what we really need to do is define what classical music is and then we can... oh... wait...

Chances are we won't agree on a common definition - what works for me may not work for you etc

I agree. We probably don't agree.
