So... none of the high end streaming components, then.

Sorry if my Audiolab and Mike's Bluesound (to name but two) don't meet your exacting standards.
Your point was "Last time I checked, #1 can't use with pretty much any streamer.#2 They seem pretty disinterested in offering platform support."
My point is, #1 you can, and #2 perhaps they are.

My point was that the last time I checked there was bugger all support. Those have all been added quite recently.

Apparently the Hifi tier is going to be called Supremium. Good name but I may not like the cost when announced.

I read two more articles on the mooted "Supremium" this morning, and both went no further than Hi-Fi, and/or "Lossless". Interestingly, they both made the same point (as I have done) that the majority of Spotify's customers listen with fairly inexpensive earbuds, and won't actually notice the difference. Supremium, whether the owners of Spotify realise it or not, is firmly aimed at Audiophiles of one degree or another, and we know that there are probably not enough of them (certainly not enough who haven't already sorted their streaming partner(s) out) to support a new (Su)premium business model.
Additionally, if Spotify plough ahead with charging extra for something that other providers are dishing out for free they will end up losing money, and customers. To me - in its current proposed incarnation at least - Supremium looks as viable and as likely as the actual discovery of Unobtanium.

Spotify have other things that might attract users to their offering.
Things like scrolling lyrics for many tracks, more artists, quicker to cover new artists, bigger Scandinavian music catalogue, possibly others too? Connect function that works with pretty much everything - obviating the need for 3rd party apps, seemless integration into voice controlled smart speakers / systems.
I'm sure there are more, but the above are what matter to me.
There's nothing wrong with Redbook. It is technically sound.
You pays your money...
If it arrives, I shall audition it, and weigh up the above..

Yes I think it all depends on the relative value of Supremium if it ever arrives and what else is included in the package for your extra cash. I'm already shelling out extra for "Premium Family".
In terms of sound quality I have a feeling that many people are already using hi-res from other providers on earbuds etc that won't necessarily make the most of it, but don't ask me to testify in court on that. So I don't think it is doomed for Spotify - if people *think* they need hi-res many will buy it as conditioned by the press coverage.

Hehe, 'think' and 'feel' are good words to describe..🙂
We have Spotify premium family, and will do for the foreseeable. So unless the difference is more than a whole Qobuz sub a month, we'd be saving.. Can't see that happening. So if Spotify hifi is redbook / sounds good, it's a no brainer for us.

I will certainly trial Spotify Supremium and compare it with Qobuz Studio. I don't expect it will win on SQ so I may just keep the current hi-bitrate Spotify and do 95% of my listening on Qobuz.

Spotify announced price rises for their US subs today so that will come to us soon no doubt. I note that the share price is getting pummeled.

I may get rid as I very rarely use Spotify at all now.
Qobuz has everything I look for, pretty much, and everything new.
