Spotify announced price rises for their US subs today so that will come to us soon no doubt. I note that the share price is getting pummeled. i’m no marketing wiz, but i would have thought IF spotify were going to roll-out ‘hi-res’ later this year it would have offered a little sugar with the vinegar of higher pricing on lossy music and announced ‘hi-res’ simultaneously. hi-res may be a pipe dream at spotify

Just came up on my Spotify app that it's another £1 a month for the Family sub. Ditto

I've just received the Premium notification, up to £10.99/mo.
This is no longer good value for me but Ruth is starting to use it more. I have until September to decide.

Oh dear, Spotify's latest figures didn't go down at all well with the market - getting obliterated in early trading, down 11% so far after yesterday's dip.

The crucial figures come in around a years time Total revenue compared to previous 12 months
The market may have some clever analysts but my guess is this is knee jerk

It seems the widening losses are to blame. They made a sizeable investment into the podcast market which has crashed and burnt thanks to the likes of Harry and Meghan not living up to expectations ...

Instead of focusing on those two tiresome people and other podcasts, they should have concentrated on getting their so-called hi-res (actually just standard res) product out the door. Had they forgotten they were a music streaming service first and foremost?
If they are now losing business to other platforms, they did have plenty of time to get it right and blew it.

Yes they got carried away with podcasts and have acknowledged mistakes and overspend there.
It seems subscriber growth was ok but revenue and outlook poor.
"Higher subscriber growth isn’t translating into equally higher revenue as average revenue per user continued to decline. Spotify’s total active users rose 27% in the quarter, beating expectations."

I think that's the point though Martin, they decided to expand beyond being just a music streaming platform, they will only have blown that in the eyes of a small niche audience who just want a music streaming service and nothing else - Spotify isn't just a music streaming platform anymore and hasn't been for awhile, so thinking of it as such isn't correct IMO.
Each platform has it's own user base and the majority who use Spotify seemingly love it. If you want a catch all mainstream service Spotify is very hard to beat, Tidal is Tidal, they hung their hat on MQA and that proved successful to a point until they were found to be bending the truth, but again the majority who use it, seem to like it and couldn't care less about MQA. Qobuz is for people like yourself who demand a certain level of sound quality, or something a bit different music catalogue wise. It's definitely very good for jazz lovers. I can't comment on any others as those are the only three I have experience of.
Spotify is only blowing it for the very small number of users who want it to provide a lossless service, but I can't imagine the vast majority of their user base understand what that is or care less. I wouldn't' say they are blowing it with a subscriber base of over 200 million premium customers and an overall user base in excess of half a billion.

Yep, I do agree to an extent, but a company should always be aware of what its core business actually is as opposed to what they want it to be (just look at Meta at the moment). I believe that to be music streaming but I could be wrong. However, you're absolutely right in that the user base probably doesn't give a toss as long as it works for them.
I may end up keeping Spotify just to keep Ruth happy now that I've got her using it off the two TVs and her phone. I taught her how to use it as the CD players we had have all given up the ghost and she was mourning her inability to play them. Now she's a streamer I think she's beginning to understand the convenience factor.

In some ways I wish there were no streaming services, it's a flawed business model IMO. The only people who seem to be winning at the moment are the record labels. The streaming services make very little and the artists even less, but that's kind of how it's always been I suppose

Media is so last century The reality is, with fast enough internet, it was always going to happen. I love having a virtually infinite collection all available instantly. As for what the performers receive, I would hope that the smaller royalties are somewhat offset by the vastly larger user base.

We'll differ here as it's not good for artists and without them we've got diddly squat. Your hope that they get well compensated is a great ideal, but in practice they are the ones who suffer, especially the artists who sit below the waterline. So I still wish it didn't exist, but that's me. Overall it's a Catch-22 - this artist puts her point of view across very well I thought.

Not holding my breath but it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
I thought they were only bringing 16/44 Red Book but '24-bit' implies full hi-res.

I'm just waiting for Qobuz connect to start rolling out, then Spotify can take whatever road they like. I'm back with them for the moment for convenience, but it's my own music I mostly play, so streaming is a secondary consideration for me.

Spotify launches Audiobooks - no thanks.
More rumblings about an impending Superpremium tier. Yawn.
