Hifi quality music punters like us must be a tiny percentage of their market

Maybe but if 'lossless' is a thing casual headphone punters want just coz it's a buzzword, even if they can't hear a difference, Spotify will do it for sure.
I guess Apple offering lossless without extra cost must be the issue here, forcing Spot to revise business model.

I was reading a headphone DAC amp review today and it said -
"I was amazed by how well it sounded, even with a source as crude as Spotify"
Amazing what shite people can come up with!

Back on the ranch, a response from Spotify re Hi-Fi - don't hold your breath ...
Hey folks,
We know that HiFi quality audio is important to you. We feel the same, and we’re excited to deliver a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium users in the future. But we don’t have timing details to share yet.
We will of course update you here when we can.
Take care.

I got a message from them about 2021 wrapped, but not the above.

It was from a mod on the Spotify Community Board.

Yes, it's on the community forum!
Why it's taken soooo long to give that little update is anyones guess.
Hope the wording means that it's included in the Premium offering. Can't see why it wouldn't be. Not everyone would use it. Competitors already include of course.

When it comes out, it'll be really interesting to compare it with Qobuz in std. res.

When it comes out, it'll be really interesting to compare it with Qobuz in std. res. I have been listening to 24/192 from Spotify for a while now.

I have been listening to 24/192 from Spotify for a while now. Where are Spotify streaming at that rate?

I have been listening to 24/192 from Spotify for a while now. Where are Spotify streaming at that rate? There are several apps that let you convert and save to hard drive, this is my preferred way than streaming.

So the app is filling in the compressed / missing data.

That's just upsampling, not native resolution.

That's just upsampling, not native resolution. Sure, however in my system with my ears it is by far the better way to go, If you can be bothered.

This is the most interesting speculation on Spotify HiFi I have read recently. Bottom line is that they are having to rethink their offer due to Apple and Amazon upping their game, and might be preparing to offer Hi Res in addition to the expected CD quality, which by itself punters won't be wanting to pay much more for. thenextweb.com/news/spotify-hifi-had-to-get-better

I'm quite surprised that Amazon don't want to share their API. Bearing in mind the number of "Prime" subscribers thay've already got things like a plugin for Volumio would surely clean up, and then when they introduced the hi-res subscription model on top...

Whilst we are all waiting for HiFi to make an appearance, Spotify have introduced a Lyrics functionality which is supposedly revealed by swiping up from the track in play, but it's not entirely functional. I can't get it on my Android app - apparently you need to open a case with Spotify support and it should appear magically in 5-7 days.

They only enable it on request? Sounds like it's still in beta test.
