Thanks, I'll keep a look out there too, never tried Box as I normally use Scan. They have just added to their line-up of the 3060 cards actually, no pricing or predicted availability dates yet though and you can't pre-order, which you often can with Scan. This however doesn't bode well - Nvidia RTX 30-Series GPU Availability to Worsen in Q1: ReportI think it might be quite a wait yet and I doubt they will be less than £400, which might be enough to put me off buying one. That would be a steep price for an entry level 30 series, but you never know?

This however doesn't bode well - Nvidia RTX 30-Series GPU Availability to Worsen in Q1: ReportI think it might be quite a wait yet and I doubt they will be less than £400, which might be enough to put me off buying one. That would be a steep price for an entry level 30 series, but you never know? " European hardware retailer Alternate, which operates in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, has spoken with Nvidia about availability and confirmed that, throughout the first quarter, the cards will be even more difficult to come by than before. There are multiple factors at play, including the surge in Ethereum mining, none of them good news" How can availability be less than zero? I'm a bit confused by that report, as NVIDIA have only announced the new RTX 3060 to the best of my knowledge, but the report seems to be mixing it up with the "old" RTX 30xx series. If you look at NVIDIA's website the 3060 has a "NOTIFY ME" button next to it - i.e. "notify me when it's been released" - but every other 30xx series card, including the 3060Ti, has a "SEE ALL BUYING OPTIONS" button, even though they are out of stock (almost) everywhere. Like I said though, I'm not rushing the new build. I've got all the bits ready to go, but until there's some news about when we can actually get a video card it seems pointless. Having a shiny new box with no video card somehow seems worse than just having a pile of parts. At this rate though, I can see my GTX1060 getting stripped from the current machine for use in the new one. In the mean time I've just bought some bits to tart up a guitar I bought some time ago, so that may be the next project.

Haha yeah, what can be harder to come by than zero availability!!!
FFS, this isn't going to help either

FFS, this isn't going to help either If mining cryptocurrency wasn't such a dodgy business I'm sure somebody would have come up with a less power-hungry, purpose-built, and far cheaper alternative to horribly expensive graphics cards. Actually, I'm still quite surprised they haven't.

Nvidea are apparently developing a mining card specifically for that, with no video outputs. How popular it will be is questionable as it would have a limited resale market, especially if mining nose dived again. But something needs to be thought of to try and solve the current issues.
What would be good is if they could nerf normal GPUs so they aren't able to be used for mining, forcing miners to buy non video output cards (assuming they release any). They could have two bites of the cherry then as a manufacturer - of course if you can't get the semi-conductors in the first place, it's a moot point!

The bottom line for NVIDIA is, I suppose, that they don't care who they're selling to as long as they keep selling as much as they can produce.

February 25 th, Tim. That's the date currently being put forward (read "guessed at") for the release of the RTX 3060. SOURCE

Cool, I'll keep an eye out.
The second part of the article header is about the only thing you can totally rely on though "Nvidia's RTX 3060 is coming out on February 25th, apparently and will probably be gone in 25 seconds"

I've just realised that my choice of mobo doesn't have integrated Bluetooth, and I need it. The quest for a dongle begins. I assume Bluetooth 5 is now de rigueur?

It seems to be that way Paul!
BT5 dongles are very cheap anyway.

I was trying to find something that combined data transfer with the AptX HD codec, but apparently, that beast doesn't exist. Seven quids worth of Chinese plastic and tin it is then.

More expense. It's just occurred to me that my very nice ACER 1080p 60Hz 27" monitor is just not going to cut the mustard. Not when this new iteration of NVIDIA graphics cards will be capable of up to 8K (16 times the number of pixels as 1080p) resolution with refresh speeds of up to 360Hz.
I don't think I'll be shopping for one just yet though, because a) The cards haven't actually been released yet, and b) I won't be buying the top of the line card, it'll be more like the one clinging gamely "to" the line, so I'll need t wait and see precisely what the spec is way down there.
It's an expense I'd forgotten about though. My old monitor will do me fine pro tem, but eventually, if I want to realise the full potential of the kit, it'll have to be done.

My 27" AOC does WQHD 2560 X 1440 resolution, which is quite enough for me. I guess you could go full 4K but you'll struggle to see individual pixels at normal viewing distance.

I've got an old AOC monitor which is due for retirement soon - which model do you have Martin?

Definition, much like memory, is something you can never have enough of with CAD work.

It's mental isn't it . . . Apparently this Internet cafe is making more money mining, than it did as an Internet cafe! Pictures show countless consumer NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 cards being used in a crypto mining farmIt's unlikely that I'm going to even try and join the melee attempting to buy one now. I really can't be arsed with the hassle it'll be, so instead I've just bought an Intel i5 NUC and an Akasa Turing fanless case, to build a clone of a Roon Nucleus server. So I'm committing myself to Roon/Tidal it seems I still can't fault Volumio for it's sound quality, but I need/want a bit more than it can provide. So good luck with the hunt for a 3060 Paul, but as the saying goes, at this point in time . . . "I'm out"

So good luck with the hunt for a 3060 Paul, but as the saying goes, at this point in time . . . "I'm out" It's mental alright, especially when you read things like " Bitcoin consumes 'more electricity than Argentina'" I seem to remember an article on TV some time back (probably "Click" on the BBC) telling how these miners were setting up shop in warehouses in places like Iceland to take advantage of the "natural" cooling. Iceland passed an addendum to an existing law stating that " It is prohibited to engage in foreign exchange trading with the electronic currency Bitcoin, according to the Icelandic Foreign Exchange Act." which doesn't actually stop them mining it. This is a good read about Iceland www.wired.com/story/iceland-bitcoin-mining-gallery/ It's a cross between " You're having a laugh", and " Are you f*ck*ng sure?" If I can get a card on release I'll get one, but I'm not jumping through any hoops for the retailers. I'd love to get stuck back in to some 3D modelling, and if I'm brutally honest, see how fast it can play games. Good luck with the Roon Nucleus server. Don't forget to let us know how it's going. I'd certaily be interested, and I know quite a few others here would too.
