I need a new one and was wondering if THIS would be good enough for everyday tasks (email, web browsing etc) and also watching/streaming video. Also, do new LT's come with a pre-installed program for editing/creating basic word documents without having to buy the full blown office program. Cheers

For every day tasks Paul that would be fine ... I'm not sure you would want to take it out the house at 2.5kg though!
Windows 8.1 doesn't come with a dedicated WP program (only notedpad / wordpad) - you can always try one of the free WP downloads like LibreOffice. I used this for a while but in the end went for a discounted version of Office as got fed up with compatibility issues with people not being able to open docs I had sent them and then me not being able to open those I had been sent created in Office!

My son has just bought a Samsung Chromebook for £169.99 from Argos Paul. Since they were launched I've been rather cynical about them but having used one now I have to admit to being very impressed. They are quick, light, very well made and the screen and keyboard on my sons are superb. What's more his lasts 10 hours on a full charge regardless of what he uses it for. The Google office suite is pretty comprehensive and very intuitive to use (it's free too) and I recall that he also got 100gb of Google Drive storage as part of the deal.
EDIT: Forgot to mention: Switch on to desktop in five seconds. Another handy feature is that when you close the screen whatever you are working on is saved and reappears instantly when you open the screen again. The clever bit is that the machine has no suspend mode, it switches off saving everything as it does so thus it doesn't impact on battery life.

Nought wrong with Windows 8.1 Very similar to 7 in terms of turning off and will protect you a lot more

I agree Jules about Libreoffice. I've tried it on my old laptop using Ubuntu OS and pretty much gave up because of a lack of compatibility. Apart from it being a bit lardy it's a good price, so I'll give it a go. My son has just bought a Samsung Chromebook for £169.99 from Argos Paul. I had considered a Chromebook Dave, but want the option of DVD drive and using other programs. I believe a Chromebook is basically a Chrome browser with the use of add-ons etc? Although it does look quite comprehensive. Cheers

It's more than a browser Paul, Chrome OS is actually a development of Android which itself was developed from Linux

It would appear not as standard Paul although there may be a workaround out there somewhere. Chromebooks can access external HD's and thumb drives however, but that doesn't help you of course.

I'll try the laptop then Dave. Cheers. No worries Paul, it could be a deal breaker for me too. I'll do some research to see if some bright spark has worked it out before giving up on one entirely

If using windows I found the SQ better than 7 I think Tony still taking both to the extremes and has yet to decide which is better But totally understand your concerns. Perhaps create a system restore point before you upgrade. Also speak with James as not sure what tweaks he made to Windows 7 to optimise for sound

It was originally 7, and yes, it was a definite upgrade going to 8. Got Gary to sort it out for me though, I'm not the world's best when it comes to computers. Gary reckons 8.1 sounds better again though.

Gary knows his stuff so perhaps wait till your next session 8.1 a lot easier to use than 8

It's not a problem as far as the TFS is concerned, I only use it to play music and occasionally a film.
Having said that, it's never been used since I got a vinyl front end sorted.
