Could somebody please explain to me how Win8 or 8.1 for that matter can 'sound' better than Win7? Genuine question this as I am at a loss to understand how this can be

No idea Dave but I tried Windows 7 and 8 through the same system and the difference was not subtle. This when Windows 8 first came out and had no thoughts this would happen so not expectation bias Remember its not just all bits I presume Windows 8 is doing a lot less so not causing as much distoration

Careful now, you'll have Martin snapping at your ankles... LOL - it's really not worth making emphatic recommendations to people any more, unless they are coming from a position of no previous device whatsoever.
If you use Apple devices and/or Cloud, stick to it. Similarly Google/Android. Similarly Windows/OneDrive. Mixing platforms will give you a headache.
One other thing: avoid Celeron processors, they're crap. If Intel, it's worth paying at least for a Core i3 CPU.

Genuine question this as I am at a loss to understand how this can be In testing, we have seen that W8.1 is a lot more efficient than W7, especially when used with an SSD. It seems that a lot of the core was either rewritten or compiled with a more efficient compiler, or both. With an SSD, 8.1 is visibly faster than 7 with no need to perform timings, it's so obvious.
When replaying audio, all this efficiency results in faster, more consistent processing of audio data decoding and routing through to USB or S/PDIF interfaces with less delay (jitter) and probably fewer spikes in power supply demand. The result is a better sound.

I returned the laptop I linked to, found it a bit slow IMO. Anyone got any opinions on buying used laptops HERE.

Those are very good, robust machines built to last. They should give excellent service, which explains the price.

Yes, the price for a refurbished did seem on the high side, but if they are of a better build/processor then maybe it will be worth trying. Cheers.

I can vouch for the Lenovo T400 - we've got two of them here and I think the're great. A bit heavy but that denotes 'solid' to me.

All IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad and T series laptops are built like battleships. I have a small Edge 11 that has been carted around the place, used to drive projectors wherever they are needed. Excellent build quality and pretty much bullet-proof. We still have obsolete R60e machines that just won't die!

Could that Lenovo laptop have a decent keyboard and bigger screen attached easily ? Not a spec expert but that sounds fast for that price
Last time I looked on Ebay for 2nd hand Lenovo desktops the prices didn't seem that much less than new Has that changed too ?

Yes to a different screen and keyboard, although Lenovo keyboards are pretty much the best I've ever used. I have a wireless Lenovo mouse which I use all the time with mine and its matching keyboard for when I sit at a desk or table.

I'd agree, an external mouse is useful (especially as many users hate the pointing sticks in older ThinkPads) but the keyboards are very good.

I tried a Laptop keyboard once Couldn't see why I would put myself through that pain (typed on an IBM clicky keyboard slightly smaller than a house) Cordless mouse is my nod to technoology
