Why are the news media happy to feed us so much depressing bad news ? What do they achieve by doing thus ? As a species do we naturally gravitate towards bad news ?

I'm drowning in bad news.
I've stopped watching Aljazeera news on TV over the past few days. Quick update on their website and BBC suffices Good news is boring and doesn't work as well as bad
It's a natural human thing that we need to get away from "Doom scrolling" is our way of trying to get a handle on what is going on. No chance when it comes to the whole world so I keep in touch less. There are wars, uprisings, protests going on all over the place

I think this is absolutely mindblowing, but then again, I would, wouldn't I?
It's an ad for a new guitar pedal, and I was almost tempted to part with £300.00 before I talked myself down. Make no mistake though, were I still playing ouit with a band I would own one by now. Some of the sounds you can wring out of this thing are unreal, in more ways than one. Listen to the "Beatles" bit and wonder at the sound of a guitar replacing an orchestra and a 16-track studio, sort of. Some of the sounds veer towards "organ" or "calliope" but then again, so did the old string synths it's emulating.
I heard about it when it was released in the States, a couple of weeks before it got here, and my first listen to it was a lot less comprehensive than this video, but I still wamted one, instantly. Sadly, my common sense won out, but I wonder if that would have been the case if there hadn't been a couple of weeks between me hearing it, and one becoming available. They started out, as I said, at around the £300.00 mark, and they're down to around £200.00 now, just weeks later. If they ever come down to thirty-bob I may just treat myself anyway, whether I need one or not.
I didn't use to need the internet, my wife knew everything.

Got my mum an Amazon Echo for her birthday and she's loving it - I bought a bigger one with 3" woofer so has a decent bit of heft to the sound. Got it linked to Spotify but it doesn't let you choose individual albums sadly - it will play from Spotify Radio, no doubt to encourage use of Amazon Music.

Wait until she finds out it can turn the lights on and off too.
Was wondering if anyone could offer an opinion on this...
I've been doing all kinds of reading in the last few months, mostly non fiction though not exclusively, and the one thing I've read that sticks out more than anything and seems to have transformed how I see my surroundings is that 95% of our decisions are emotionally based. 5% based on facts and logic.
It's written in the book 'Master Your Mind' by Ryan Munsey. In the book he explains he did not create this theory but that it belongs to neuroscientist and author/TED talker Antonio Damasio.
I've read plenty of theories before but this one changed how I see so much and I see it all around me now and tbh it's a bit of a disappointment and low imo to think decisions are made at work this way but I still see it now.
Add to that we are influenced by our surroundings and what is going on around us to a large degree Still surprises me by how much

Just to throw a spanner in the works, suppose you make an emotional decision, and it pans out perfectly.
The next time you're called upon to make the same sort of decision you obviously go the same way. Is that still an emotional decision, or is it factual, and logical now, because it was successful previously?
If you make the same decision for a third time, is it still emotional, or still factual/logical, or has it become a conditioned reflex by now, a-la Pavlov and his drooling doggies?
As the world-renowned philosopher, S. L. Inger, once remarked, "I love this metaphysical shit".

Interesting, Paul. Though the second time around can it still be classified as a decision or is it just hitting replay on what has proven to work/provide results?

Just a bit of fun. Proving how easy it is to make dodgy theories sound plausible.
What is a simple definition of theory?
A theory is a carefully thought-out explanation for observations of the natural world that has been constructed using the scientific method, and which brings together many facts and hypotheses.
Nah! On the internet a "theory" is just one made-up "fact", written with confidence.
I didn't use to need the internet, my wife knew everything.
Hmmm. I see what you mean. It seems a little bit like what you were saying about statistics. They can be skewed to nearly fit any agenda simply by selecting which criteria is included to make up the statistic.
Regarding theories, if they are published in a book they look so nice and shiny and are hard to resist. Same with a well presented meme.
Take a stab at what you think it is and set the data up to prove it
Sweeping statements r us
