Some food for thought here from Steve Guttenberg.
< Are the richest audiophiles happier than us with the sound of their systems? >
My instinct would be no, as most of us are still chasing the next best thing no matter how much we spend!
And also, more expensive doesn't necessarily mean more satisfying. Well matched cheaper gear often outperforms poorly matched expensive gear.

I'm always after the best sound I can get for the least money, relatively speaking.

The less I spend on hifi bits, and the more I make myself and with my coconspirators, the happier I have been.

No. Well performing components and tweaks make me happier.
However, it's all about the music. That makes me happy.

Any thoughts on Steve's original question -

Any thoughts on Steve's original question - < Are the richest audiophiles happier than us with the sound of their systems? > Well, all I can tell you is that I have heard systems costing many times the price of my house, and you wouldn't listen to the football on it. Whether they are happier than I am with my system...I don't know

The thread's title is at odds with Steve's claim.
Munich is the best place to realise that an expensive system can shit on a cheaper one and vice versa.
All things being equal, and with a discerning ear, more money will almost certainly produce better results assuming that money is deployed well.
As a hobbyist from a teenager, you'd have to be totally incompetent not to have an ace system by the time you were a lot more wealthy, if money ever came your way.
I don't like Steve G. He makes me cringe.

I can only apologise twice then.
Have amended thread title.

Well, all I can tell you is that I have heard systems costing many times the price of my house, and you wouldn't listen to the football on it. Whether they are happier than I am with my system...I don't know I guess they might be luxuriating in ignorant bliss! Seriously, I went to a guys house and he played his system and I was totally aghast at what came out of the speakers......I'd never heard anything sound so discombobulated. He was explaining to me how and why everything worked so well together ....... I couldn't hold it in and asked when he last had his hearing tested. He was literally regurgitating the sales pitch he'd bought into and boy oh boy, it was a sorry state. That system cost over £180k....

It doesn't surprise me, but if you've spent that much it would take a strong personality to admit to making a mistake!

I believe I've already mentioned Chord / Wilson Benesch. Some of the worst sounds I've ever heard at hi-fi shows for a great deal of money.
That system would make a grown man cry.

I'm never likely to be in a position to answer definitively.

I insist that I am not an audiophile.
Anyone who concentrates on expensive kit, calling themselves whatever they want, probably has the wrong approach, for me anyway

I've got 2 systems, in two locations, that I listen to on a regular basis.
One cost me less than £300, and I'm listening to it as I type. The other cost about £15k (the vast majority being in 2010 money).
I enjoy both. But I don't regret spending the £15k at all, money well spent imo.
So yes, I'm happier with the more expensive system. I guess that answers the question as I'm sure I'd be even happier with a £100k system provided I did the choosing.

5 signs that you are a audiophile You upgrade your system more than once a year You know the other meaning to what PRAT means You obsess about audio quality You spent more money on your system than you have on music You constantly deny you are a audiophile

My system has always cost more than my music and it is in a constant state of change. It's a bit hard in these days of £15/month hirez streaming not to have a system that costs more than the music!

I think if you gave 100k to anyone on this forum to spend on hifi they would do a decent job with it but I'm thinking about those for whom blowing that kind of dosh wouldn't be a sweat on any given day. I imagine there's two different types who buy the uber expensive stuff - those who are 'audiophiles' and genuinely seeking the best they can get; then there are those who buy expensive gear just because they can. Those people are seeking something reflecting their status and may not bother to look at lots of options or seek to upgrade or change it. All pure supposition on my part of course!
