Unlike Oli, who I guess visits audiophile customers who probably aren't short of a million or two, it's been decades since I heard anyone's system who has spent significantly more than me.
Rockport turntable, a wall full of Jadis valve amps, and Rockport speakers comes to mind - probably £200k 25-30 years ago. And yes, it was awesome in some ways, although I'm sure I would have spent the money differently. Was the owner happy with it? Hmm, not sure. Quite possibly not, he was constantly futzing around with it, trying to squeeze that little bit extra out of it.

One most certainly does not to have to be rich to enjoy a decent sound....it is all subjective any road.

Seems the general consensus is if you know what you are doing money helps;)

I wonder how difficult it would be to stop spending / tweaking / box-swapping once we'd all assembled a dream 100k+ system? I can imagine that if you are still 'chasing a dream' after all that expenditure it could be rather a difficult and negative state of mind to be in.

I think there's always a certain amount of resentment from people who do not have money against those that do.
Not in all cases, but I would definitely say a lot of people seem to be that way.
Because of this resentment we get lots of pokes at people who have spent shit loads on something that isn't that important to them. Purely because they have that ability to spend that kind of cash.
Same with cars. The chap with money who hasn't the first clue may have 5 ultra high end cars whereas the real enthusiast is basically fucked because he can't afford them.
It's just life. Live with it. Console yourself that even the guy with cash is gonna fucking die. But then again he just might live longer for better medical treatment:D

With both hi-fi and cars, I get more out of optimising their performance. Real-world is where it's at.
I genuinely don't lust after anything much in hi-fi and I certainly don't lust after supercars.

Money cannot buy happiness. That said, it can allow you to be bloody miserable in comfort.

If I won big on premium bonds I'd be happy to spend a few hundred k on a purpose built room and some seriously expensive audio gear to go in it - and yes, I'd be disappointed and would have done a crap job if I wasn't happier with the system than I am now.
I wouldn't be interested in a Ferrari or a Porsche, all available fun-funds would go on a music system.

I've just now watched the Guttenberg vid, not come across him before I've just heard the name. I quite liked him, his enthusiasm seemed genuine and I agree with his perspectives on things.
Pretty much what I'd expect. Given a large group of people, you get a wide distribution of attitudes and abilities. I'm not actually sure he added anything to the sum total of human knowledge.
I can't identify with the kind of rich people he describes, though. I have been to some super-rich people's homes and have never found them comfortable places to be. I think I'd still be a scruffy slob if I won a £million!

I wouldn't classify anyone as rich with a mere million.
100 million is rich. 10 million total worth is merely well off in London.

If my premium bonds gave me a million it would go straight into a new home - that I actually *need*.

I believe I've already mentioned Chord / Wilson Benesch. Some of the worst sounds I've ever heard at hi-fi shows for a great deal of money. That system would make a grown man cry. Interesting, I find my WB Vectors actually very good IMO, but perhaps they work well with my amp and in my room. In answer to the question, if they have selected equipment that works well together and it produces an aural rendition as good as it can get, whatever that is, if they are able to appreciate that then they might be happy. But not necessarily happier than someone who has had to save every penny to get their system that costs considerably less and love what they have. I did hear a very special system at a dealers a few years ago, a top flight SME TT and Arm with a high-end MC cartridge, Jardis - pre and main power amps, feeding Rockport speakers, and some rather expensive cables in-between. If I remember correctly it was somewhere around £350-400K, maybe more. If I had lots of money and a suitable listening room to put it I would probably buy it and be happy. Would I be much happier than what I currently have, probably not as I suspect it would show up the inadequacies in any poor recording to great effect, whether vinyl or digital.

The only component I could think of that I might want would be a pair of Wilson Sasha speakers. At a cool £40k they are twice the price of my Ushers but certainly not nearly twice as good. Diminishing returns and all that. I really don't have need of anything, I am happy with what I have.
As you mention, Adrian, good as my room is, it might be the final limiter to what I can achieve, anyway.

Yes I was nearly tempted by a pair of used Wilson Audio Sophia's (II's I think) but SWMBO was not too amused by yet another changed in boxes at the time, so I bailed out. But I think that Wilsons might be the way to go in the future if I get the chance.
