Hi Martin
Did you ever get to do any further tests with a 'more expensive' meter?
Cheers. Bill

Hi Bill, no, I found that the cheap meter correlated highly with the sound quality I was getting.
Worst case was those dimmable LEDs above our dining table. Terrible noise (over 200mV) and the SQ suffered a little. Getting the noise in the music room down to 19mV or lower correlated with the best sound I was getting.
Remember, my system already rejects noise pretty well. For most households and systems, noise is going to be a greater problem.

LEDs ?
Thought they would be ok
Was it the LEDs or the dimmer causing the noise ?

All-LED in the Music Room but only two uplighters lit when I'm listening.
The rest of the barn is as normal. Ruth knows not to turn on those shitty dimmed lights over the dining table when I'm listening.

Like the idea of Ruth sitting in the dark

Yes, CFLs are worse which is why they're nearly all gone. Just waiting for the few left to die.
There are plenty of LED lights in the main house, she doesn't need the dining table lights!

Good to hear I'll be replacing our CFLs with LEDs

Switched LEDs good. Dimmed LEDs bad!

I think I mentioned, I've used LED tubes in the kitchen for a while, and they're much better than the old fluorescent tubes. They activate immediately, so there's no " hold on, I'm still thinking about it" pause when switching on, there's no angry buzzing, etc. You can also get them in cool, daylight, white, etc.

Our garage has tubes so I'll look at the LED ones when they need replacement.

I’ve found that Shunyata mains cables (nr versions) to be very effective in removing mains hash.

Likewise with Coherent mains cables. However, it's best practice to first remove all sources of noise as much as possible and get that noise floor down.

Interesting revisiting this thread to usefully remind me of what you found on testing

Yes, it's interesting re-reading this thread. One of the main shortcomings of my Cyrus preamp is a relative lack of soundstage depth. I wonder if the Cyrus is particularly sensitive to mainsborne noise.
I shall dig out a couple of my usually useless ferrite clamps and listen for any differences.

One of the main shortcomings of my Cyrus preamp is a relative lack of soundstage depth. With your speakers, lack of soundstage depth would be hard to achieve. Worth trying a plug-in filter. Unfortunately, only the Kemp and Sercal measured well and they're both hard to get. Use your eBay fu!
