Looking at first albums only, what do you rate as way above the norm for an inaugural album? I'll start the ball rolling with two:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
They issued their first album as a fully formed classic, with great crunching chords and the minor-key demonic wailing that became their signature sound. They created the heavy metal genre in one fell swoop. The opening track for me is one of the greatest ever openers.
Dire Straits - Dire Straits
A perfect first album, already displaying Mark Knopfler's considerable artistry with the guitar and containing some memorable songs. Great sound quality, too.

The greatest first album of all time , largely because they only made 2 and the second one is shit and because i was a student in Madchester at the time is the eponymously titled first album by the Stone Roses . THIS IS THE ONE , end of debate . It also brings back many found and bitter sweet memories . For example, I had a girlfriend of 7 years who used to play I am the resurrection repeatedly on my Pink Triangle , every time i came in it would be on . and despite having these lyrics Down, down, you bring me down I hear you knocking down my door And I can't sleep at night. Your face it has no place No room for you inside my house I need to be alone. Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you, I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do. Turn, turn, I wish you'd learn There's a time and place for everything I've got to get it through. Cut loose 'cause you're no use I couldn't stand another Second in your company. Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you, I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do. Stone me why can't you see You're a no one nowhere washed up baby Who'd look better dead. Your tongue is far too long I don't like the way it sucks and Slurs upon my every word. Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you, I don't care where you've been or what you plan to do. I am the resurrection and I am the life, I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like. I am the resurrection and I am the life, I couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like. It never occurred to me , till she left shortly thereafter .

'Black Sabbath' is a staggering first album in every way. The first Heart album, 'Dreamboat Annie', is quite wonderful and one of my fave pieces of vinyl. Great songs, production and musicianship - it has it all. Van Halen 1 is lots of fun and was hugely influential in ushering in a new wave of hard rock and guitar histrionics.

Having given this a little thought, for me, the best example of a band whose first album was truly outstanding - a genre-defining landmark of its time - and not bettered by any of their subsequent albums, has to be RATMs self-titled debut. I'll just leave the opening track here...

Some good Albums , however on a point of semantics to be a great first album it must surely eclipse all that you follow it with , otherwise it is just a practice album .
Tresspass is good , Selling England by the Pound is awesome .
Brewing up with Billy Bragg is good , Workers Playtime is profound poetry and Billy's apogee.

The thread is 'Great First Albums' not 'First Album is best'. That could be another thread and there are certainly a few artists that never bettered their first effort. Doesn't have to be the best by the artist to be a great debut. In the context of 1963 'Please Please Me' is a surprising debut for it's time as The Beatles wrote a number of their own songs and it wasn't full of filler as they put their own stamp on the covers most of which people would never have heard the originals. Without this album would all the others listed have existed?
