Joan Armatrading Tracy Chapman Bad Company Joan Armatrading is her third album if you count the first with Pam Nestor as co-writer. 'Whatever's For Us' is the surprisingly little known excellent debut.

Some good Albums , however on a point of semantics to be a great first album it must surely eclipse all that you follow it with , otherwise it is just a practice album . I was about to agree with you, but then I thought of exceptions, like Communique being an even better album than Dire Straits.
Oh, and I agree about SEBTP being the pinnacle of Genesis' output.

Beep! Not her first album. Yup, so I have been informed. However as I had her first and didn't like it much , I will allow myself to say this is her first as far as I'm concerned!!

Aside from ace albums already mentioned I'll offer up the Violent Femmes debut album. First track:

"This is us, we've arrived"...
First track, debut album...blow the bloody doors off! Their best album in my book and as good a debut as the Stone Roses album.
