An Amati 'Piccolo Violin' from 1588.
Interesting? It certainly is!
Even on my mobile I am struck by its sound.

Sometimes, Wikipedia is useful, and interesting too. The violino piccolo (also called the Diskantgeige, Terzgeige, Quartgeige or Violino alla francese) is a stringed instrument of the baroque period. Most examples are similar to a child's size violin in size, and are tuned a minor third (B♭3–F4–C5–G5) or a fourth higher (C4–G4–D5–A5). Probably the most famous work featuring violino piccolo is the first Brandenburg Concerto of Johann Sebastian Bach. The best-known violino piccolo is the Brothers Amati example in the National Music Museum, in Vermillion, South Dakota. By modern measurements, the body is 1⁄4 size, the neck 1⁄2 size, and the head corresponds to that of a 3⁄4 size instrument. The string length is the equivalent of a 4⁄4 violin stopped a minor third from the nut, which corresponds with its normal tuning of a third higher than a 4⁄4 violin. It's notated in E flat. This Amati violin also has fingerboard widths similar to that of a 4⁄4 board cut a third shorter, which in view of the other measurements implies a clear conceptual relationship to the 4⁄4-sized violin. When the construction of the violin changed as the rococo period began, it became possible to play many higher-pitched violin parts on a standard violin, and the piccolo was no longer considered necessary. In modern performances of older works that specifically call for the violino piccolo, it is common for a woodwind instrument capable of playing in its range, such as an oboe, to be substituted. Violins of similar tuning have been built in modern times (specifically the soprano violin of the new violin family) but have not yet been accepted as standard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violino_piccolo

MIKE: Is it the scale of the violin body or is that a long bow ? VIDEO (25 seconds to 30 seconds): "But, it's a little smaller than a normal violin, It's about a three-quarter-size instrument... " ANSWER: It's the scale of the violin body.

I absolutely love the YT channel from which these vids are taken. The combination of getting to know more about these masterful old violins both in words and music is irresistible.
Just check out the dark, deep tone from this 1610 Maggini. I have to agree it was made to play Bach on! Just listen to the few bars played here ... so haunting.

Don't think I've ever seen anyone play violin with a bottleneck!

I like the £70 Amazon violin compared to a few others vid. I don't have Golden Ears as far classical music is concerned, but it was easy to spot, and sounded pretty dire, in comparison.

Yes it's not difficult even over our computers! Not so long ago I posted a vid of 'Two Step Violin' playing 7 different Stradivarius violins - a bit more challenging to spot ...

Whilst we are in isolation mode I can't crank up my system - I would be interested to here from anyone who can what they think of the piano tone on this recording and whether it comes across differently to any other recent solo piano recording.

My untrained ears tell me that it's a very fine piano in an excellent recording. It delineates the hammer strikes and makes Barenboim sound more like Lupu.

He's a very fine player indeed even if perhaps suited better to some repertoire than others. I am looking forward to exploring this recording in more detail.
