OMG!!
After my son's Skype violin lesson I attempted to fit a new gold plated E string. If you get a nice one these can sound sweeter and less strident than the regular aluminium ones you get in a set.
I can tell you it was a frickin' nightmare of Wagnerian proportions. Last time I managed it with out too much drama but this time I couldn't get it winding neatly round the peg and it took any number of attempts.
If anyone thinks it must be easy try this wonderfully eccentric video guide for size -

A most engaging personal perspective on playing a Strad. This young chap talks very eloquently and plays superbly.

I am completely entranced by the sound of a Lirone.
This short film from the OAE is a fascinating introduction to this Baroque wonder.

It sounds like it has an accompanying drone. Intriguing.

Insanely tricky to master to that level I imagine.

All those strings, yet she looked dead relaxed playing it

In addition to the Lirone I believe that she plays Baroque violin, viol and viola.

Another informative film tracing the roots of the modern double-bass back to Renaissance times and the violone.

The Octobasse. Absolute insanity but MartinT and speedysteve might like to test out their bass response ...

I'll see your Octobass, and raise you a bloody enormous violin. and some massive flutes. and a sax on steroids. Clarinets of all shapes and sizes, anyone?

I've been a bit unhappy about the sound of our piano recently. Couldn't help but noticing my son had been putting a lot of his music on top of the piano and it suddenly clicked - this can't be a good idea.
All music removed and normal service resumed - the books were obviously dampening some of the natural reverberation of the piano and playing havoc with the tonality. The decay and intrinsic quality of the notes is much more satisfying now!
