I have to board my wayback machine to remember the first time that I heard Ry Cooder. It was on Mick Jagger's "Memo to Turner" song... blew me away. Still does.

My first listen to a Ry Cooder album was Bop Til You Drop back around the early 1980s. Later on, I heard some negativity towards the album for being 'badly recorded' (probably knowing that it was a very early digital recording and knocking it for just that reason). In fact, I find Bop to be an outstanding album for both performance and recording and it's clear that the engineer kept the levels safely below digital clipping as all you need to do is turn the level up by +4dB or so.

The Ry Cooder Discography has been massively enlarged with all sorts now available. Plenty of not seen before albums on Qobuz Think some may be around on CD for premium price
Particularly nice is Paris Texas / Vigilante Man on Ry Cooder & David Lindley Vienna 1995
The great concert in Santa Cruz is also there
Cambridge Folk Festival Unplugged 1972 I have queued up and loads more. Wonderful

Ry Cooder has been a man starting like many do as a session musician and then following his own trail through American music in most if not all of its forms . His playing in my view has been that lovely balance between what the song needs and keeping a feel to the song . He is almost never flashy or playing for effect . Bop till you drop was in fact the very first ever popular record recorded and mixed fully digitally and used a Sony Video Machine as the recording device . As this was all new and the engineer was told that the world would end if he went in to overload it is one of the quietest recordings , but as mentioned a little more volume and the quality of the performance and recording do shine . If you want to get the best of Ry in one hit keep a look out for the Rhino Records 11 CD box set . Not only are these the best of his work as a solo artist but they were fully remastered with his Son sat in on the mastering to make sure they were what his father wanted.
