I spot two toroids ripe for Mad Scientist Black Donuts! They'll be too big for the case, whether they are or not.

After a brief sojourn in Leipzig my DAC has landed in the UK.

Yay! Now to get Parcelfarce or whoever to action it quickly. And to add the 'handling charge' for literally handling it.

DHL has got it this far and DHL can bloody well bring it to my door. Parcelfarce can keep their grubby mitts off of it.

I recommend paying the customs charges online Paul - I paid mine in cash to the courier and it took a number of emails convincing 'accounts' I had paid. But it was pretty amazing getting the DHL Express delivery in 2 days from China.

According to the DHL site, my DAC should arrive today, as opposed to tomorrow which was the original estimate. So far there have been no demands for money, with, or without, menaces.

Sometimes DHL will send you and invoice after delivery which can tale up-to 4 weeks lol other times they will send you are card BEFORE delivering so you can call and pay them, but it does take a couple of days for this to happen. However if you have a tracking number (Air way bill number) call them up and ask for custom charges and you will pay them there, then sudden things start to fall in to place, do not wait for them it will add further delays. In the last four months UPS call me while my shipments are in the air of traveling via the chunnel, and they are paid before they reach the depot, no hassle just here with paperwork. Last Tuesday I ordered several large pieces of test equipment form the US, they arrived on Thursday afternoon as I have paid the duty the day before, they have an agreement with customs and excise, they have agreed the duty etc from the commercial invoice on route, though the input duties where over three thousand though we do claim the vat back thankful for small mercies!

Wow that's good not happened with DHL here good stuff. Now go and plug it in and don't come back until you have a damn good listen. It may be a while before I get it set up properly, Tony. I've got lots of work to do first. First impressions - It's built like the proverbial battleship, and weighs in at almost 4.2 kg. On the down-side there was absolutely nothing inside the box except the DAC. No mains lead, no incredibly cheap-and-nasty optical (or co-ax) leads, and no instruction manual. Now, to be fair, even if those were in the box I wouldn't have used any of them, but it would be a cheap way for the manufacturer to increase perceived vfm. There is no remote, but I already knew that. I'll probably jury-rig it later to make sure it all works as it should, and then, tomorrow, start breaking the system down and rebuilding it.

My LKS 'manual' was a few sheets of photocopied paper.
At least I got a nice metal remote!

What do you use your remote for Martin? I don't have any use for mine!

I've just been charged £20.06 at the door. I hope you got a receipt - this was my mistake. Yup, there were two copies for me to sign; one for them and one for me. I've hooked it up and my first reaction was "that's loud." Levon Helm was trying to lift my ceiling. I'm now playing the last bit of Mahler's 8 th and it's a bit "bass light" and quite a hard-edged sound, if that makes sense, but bearing in mind it's only had a couple of minutes to warm up I'm hopeful that that will resolve itself. There are also the usual filters one finds on a Chinese DAC for me to run through. It's a "clean" sound, perhaps too clean in fact but I'm hearing bits of Jeff Lynne's "Armchair Theatre" I hadn't heard before, like where one of the chorus voices has a slight lag and cuts of a fraction late on one of the choruses. Any more words from me would be fairly pointless. Let's see how it sounds after a week or so.

I found on my Naim CD3.5 that the anologue output stage (filter) had the most influence over the sound of the player. Luckily for me the dac used has an opamp inside so could drive the next stage without an output stage / buffer. So i bypassed the whole of the output stage and liked it more than with it in !

Sorry, Stu, that all sounds far too much like witchcraft to me, mate. The filters on the DAC have names like "short slow" and "low delay." They might as well all be called "suck it and see #1", "suck it and see #2" etc. N.B. Rostropovich's Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites does NOT sound awful through the DAC, which is good. At least I can play stuff without it making my teeth itch.
