Back to dacs, I can heartily recommend the D50. It has 7 filter settings so I am sure one would suit your ear. I use filter setting 4, it is the most natural sounding dac I have had. I've considered the D50, but I know it didn't suit Jules, and t.b.h. the couple of Topping amps I tried I didn't like. I must admit I'm leaning more towards an AK4497 chipped DAC though, despite the fact that it's all, as I said, become a bit academic now. It's been an expensive month, and I'm a poor, impoverished, pensioner now, which means that I'm an even tighter b*st*rd than I used to be. The other positive with the Chinese AK4497 DACS is that looking at them it would possibly be quite easy to "roll" the op amps, and upgrade the caps if I think it might be worthwhile. It's not something I'm aiming to do, but it's nice to have the option. I can also buy the "bundle" that comes without a USB input, which lowers the price.

PITA Thought this only happened to me ! If it's any consolation, Mike, I've also had a water leak and a gas leak in the last 6 months. Both, happily, outside the property, but the gas leak entailed new piping from the external meter all the way to the cooker and boiler. I've got a man coming in on Thursday to give my electrics a thorough testing. I'm half-dreading the end result of that already. How about when I had water in my gas ? The D50 isn't a patch on the D70, Jules system is quite unique in all fairness so he may have misunderstood the D50 and in other systems it performs to a higher level imho.

As I keep saying, it's all pretty academic now, it's been a bloody expensive month with one thing and another, but were I still in the market this one would be at the to top my list so far. I'd choose "Bundle 1" because I have no need of a USB input; all I need is the optical and coax inputs. I don't even want balanced outputs, but everybody seems to be bunging XLR sockets on their kit these days so there's no choice in the matter. For less than £300.00 delivered though, even with the "posh" USB option, it looks pretty good on the face of it.

Sorry I don't understand! Not sure my system is particularly unique either . I would agree the D70 is in a different class to the D50 however.

It does look like it, John, if the spec is genuine.

My RVC is also made by Mshow Audio ... That's good to know, Jules, especially as you're obviously happy with it. How's the build quality? Battleship, armoured car, Ford Focus, or ?

I shall have a think overnight and then buy it tomorrow make a decision tomorrow. Any final thoughts chaps? I'm buying almost blind so any words of encouragement, or otherwise, will be received with thanks. One interesting little snippet I picked up along the way: I found mention of the "fact" that implementation of the AK4497 is a simpler job than implementation of the ES9038PRO.

Yes, I can believe that. The ESS9038 chipset is fantastically complex and probably quite easy to make a pig's ear of.

The AK 4497 looks quite complicated enough to me...

At this price point I go for the 4497 chip based DAC but once it has burned in I try it the main system

The build quality of the main unit has been excellent, no issues so far at all ... My only complaint was the horrendous remote control that was supplied where you had to remove a small circuit board to put in the battery!! Mine was knackered but the seller sent out a replacement v quickly and was most obliging.

DAC ordered. I got the bundle with "xmos usb" in the end. One never knows when it might come in handy.
